Somebody’s Watching Me…Part 1
We at PQ Living like to play the game “Spot The Eye In The Sky” every once in a while and the photo on the left of the alley connecting D Street NW with E Street NW in the 600 block shows that, as Rockwell crooned in the ’80s, someone indeed is watching me. Car insurance commercial jokes aside, click on the image to find the security video camera.
This got us thinking about Google’s Street View, the street level photographs of many US cities posted online and attached to the Google Maps site, and the privacy flap it caused when first released. It even spawned a few Street View “sighting” web posts and sites such as this one and this one and this one with scenes varying from the hilarious to the potentially illegal.
Street View blankets much of DC and Google generally did a good job of keeping most unwitting PQ actors hazy enough that a viewer can’t identify them. One of our favorites is the view shown below of the northwest corner of 7th Street and G Street NW. (Click on the link for the fully interactive Google image.)
What is this person standing at 7th and G Streets NW doing with their apparently raised arms? Shout out or obscene gesture? Who knows? Fortunately for them, they can say they had their Street View cloak on. Is somebody watching you?
What else did we find in Street View? We’re saving that for the next story. In the meantime, if you have good DC Street Views to share, let us know at pqliving [at] gmail [dot] com.

It is true, our neighborhood must win the prize for “most surveilled in DC.” Sometimes I feel like I’m in the UK with all of these cameras around.
If you go to the Washington Post and click on traffic, you can actually click on the cameras on the map and look at the street in real time.
someone i may or may not know… “POSED” in the middle of a “Street View” had a friend do a “screen capture” and used it to make some realllly crazy/cool {read: youre being watched by the man} christmas cards.
xoxo
That, sb, is a brilliant idea and I’m only sorry that I didn’t think of it first. Luckily none of you are on my xmas card mailing list (at least I don’t have any Monkeyrotica’s or Anon’s on it that I know of) so I can claim the idea as my own come the holiday season.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Great post, I kind of knew about Google Street View but hadn’t played around with it at all. It’s going to be hard to be “on” all the time when outside, lest you be caught on camera doing something foolish for all to see.
Hey maybe this is the way to catch the folks who spit out there gum/cigarette butts/don’t clean up after their dogs!
You have to wonder, will there come a time when we all pull a Howard Beale and get mad as hell about all of this?
