Tangysweet & Red Velvet Opening This Thursday! (Soft Opening Today?) *Updated*

Posted by gpliving
December 16, 2008

Thanks to PQL reader, Cheryl, for sending in a tip that Tangysweet & Red Velvet are opening this Thursday, Dec 18th!  The store is located on the northeast corner of 7th & E St NW (675 E St NW).  It will feature a full juice bar and hours will be according to foot traffic (probably noon – 11pm).

The store is supposed to have a soft opening, so it possibly opened as early as yesterday.  Please report in if you see it open!

Update: We walked by this morning and saw the same cupcakes in the window that Andy In PQ mentioned in the comments section.  The store did not look like it would be opening today.

I saw cupcakes on trays in the window this morning. So maybe they are already open.

I tried out their Dupont location and I did like the store’s simplicity – both in terms of menu and style. you get a few base yogurt choices but lots of topping choices to craft your “meal” (and the large is big enough to be a meal!).

yay. original plus coconut, mochi and mango here i come!!

Yay for more retail. Now once Sei and some other businesses open on 7th between D and E, that end of PQ will be recharged…now if only it wasn’t for the Balducci’s dead space.

Comment by Kimberly on December 16, 2008 @ 3:30 pm

Yay. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Any word on when Ray and Sei are opening?

Comment by YOGURRRRRRT!!! on December 16, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

Someone located nearby report back! I need to see if I can get my froyou fix there!

Seeing how I read this blog every day, I’m not sure how I missed the posts that let us know Sweet/Velvet were coming. I am thankful now that I did. I would have been camped out at the door waiting for them to open. I’ll try to wait patiently until Thursday, but will put in an order for Christmas cupcakes today.

I think this is a place that will FINALLY make it in that spot.

We just stopped by and walked into it (around 6pm). Job applications/interviews going on, but we did meet the manager or owner (?) and he gave us a couple of cupcakes to try. THEY WERE DELICIOUS!!! I can’t wait to try the yogurt and think this is a GREAT addition to our neighborhood.

Comment by PedsRDinDC on December 17, 2008 @ 8:34 am

This is just what the neighborhood needs to feel like a neighborhood! How do we get more small business owners to open up around here?

Comment by Aaron Gordon on December 17, 2008 @ 8:39 pm

Hello Neighbors,

Thanks for the friendly comments. We are still finalizing our pastry training and awaiting final permits. We plan to open our doors at both Red Velvet and Tangysweet within a week and prior to the holidays.

I will keep you updated.

Best,
Aaron

Sweet!!! (pun intended)

Comment by Elizabeth on December 18, 2008 @ 9:20 pm

Thanks for the update- can’t wait for the opening!

Comment by Su Jay on December 19, 2008 @ 3:26 pm

We need a reasonably priced place for weekend breakfast/brunch. I love Poste but it gets expensive.

Comment by People named Aaron on December 19, 2008 @ 4:29 pm

Do we get free yogurt when we first come in if we are named Aaron also?

Comment by Jon on December 19, 2008 @ 9:50 pm

Moderate priced brunch?!
Matchbox is amazing ans much cheaper than Poste.

Just got back from Red Velvet.

The store occupies about 1/8 of the total space. TangySweet occupies the rest. They have separate entrances. The TS has the restrooms, etc.

The $3.25 cupcake was quite good — one of the better ones in town. The red velet cupcake was toothy, flavorful, chocolaty and has nice crumb. The cream cheese frosting was a bit overly sweet and could have had more vanilla in the mix, but was a nice compliment to the cake.

The TS was a nice architectural mix of the old space and the award-winning design of their Dupont store. The LED-lit cubes work as tables and a room divider.

I wish both businesses the best of luck — it is great to have fresh baked pastries (ok, cupcakes) in the hood. And an alternative to gooey Haagen-Daaz is always welcome.

Thanks for the report, Jon!

Comment by pqresident on December 21, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

both stores are very definitely open. I think the frozen yogurt will be a big hit with the tourists that travel 7th Street in the summer months to get to the Nat’l Portrait Gallery and the Chinatown arch.

Comment by princessxemina on December 22, 2008 @ 11:31 am

Went by both stores yesterday. Both were open, though Tangysweet was working out kinks with their yogurt machines. Hubby had a peanut butter-chocolate cupcake and said it was great. Both stores are having their official grand opening tomorrow–Tuesday 12/23/08. Both are pretty sterile-looking inside, but great if you like a streamlined, minimalist look. Very excited to have both in the neighborhood!

Just came from the stores, I agree nice space. They have not had their grand opening yet, now they say after the holidays. (They change their minds about it quite a lot!)
