The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Campaign
A new sign went up recently on the construction fence around Ford’s Theatre advertising The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Campaign. Born February 12th, 1809 Lincoln’s 200th birthday wont happen till next year, but that only means it’s time to start the planning. Some of the events associated with the bicentennial include:
- Bicentennial Birthday Gala
February 2, 2009
The Lincoln Bicentennial year 2009 will open with a world class concert and entertainment special in the nation’s capital. Nineteenth century popular and patriotic music will be performed by outstanding military bands. Portions of this event will be taped for broadcast television. - Lincoln Memorial Rededication
Spring 2009
“Four score and seven years” after President Warren Harding dedicated the Lincoln Memorial on May 30, 1922, the Lincoln Memorial will be rededicated with a memorable public program. The 44th President of the Unites States will be invited to give an address.

Speaking of Construction, did anyone notice this in Monday’s Post:
Next week, he plans to make a presentation on a new luxury hotel that he wants to build on a lot he bought at Fifth and Eye streets NW.
There will be a subterranean nightclub, so as not to disturb the neighbors at 555 Massachusetts Ave. On the first floor will be a high-end, glass-walled restaurant named after Peebles’s wife. A coffee shop will serve guests and the community.
“D.C. is ready for something a little more chic, a little more sophisticated,” Peebles said.
I like the underground nightclub idea. Sounds promising. Here’s the whole article.
He told us it would be a “private” nightclub with membership fees. Hardly a neighborhood hangout. We need a diner that serves breakfast!!!!
there’s a pretty fantastic explanation of Lincoln’s presidency, his inaugural ball, the assassination and the Booth chase that followed in the National Portrait Gallery near the Presidential Portrait exhibit on the second floor. the exhibit is askance the F Street Portico Cafe entrance and definitely worth checking out.
the Cafe is great for hanging out too…nice view and they offer food and bottles of wine (for your foursome).
Mayor Fenty’s proposed budget includes $10 million in DC taxpayer funds to renovate Ford’s Theatre, with the District contributing an even larger share than the federal government. It’s the largest earmark in the entire DC budget. The Theatre is federal property and is exempt from DC property taxes. Shouldn’t the federal government pay the bulk of it? I’ve heard the argument that Ford’s is a “economic driver” for PQ – bringing in tourists. So do we next allocate DC funds to the Spy Museum? Or should we, in the age of taxation without representation, also commit DC funds to, say, repair the capital dome or renovate Smithsonian museums?
Here is the initial article in The Examiner, my response, and a follow up article:

Most, but not all, of the Council Members have criticized the proposed DC spending.
In my opinion, local taxes should go for local projects. And while the feds are working on renovations in PQ, let’s see them renovate the parks they own and control, including those at 5th and Mass. – that’s been awaiting transformation into a Chinatown park for 10 years!

Police have just yellowtaped the entire block on F Street between 12th and 13th. This is right next to one of the exits from Metro Center. Anyone know what happened? Hopefully not another incident violent crime.
