Ford’s Theatre Center for Education and Leadership
Thursday afternoon a huge banner went up advertising the Ford’s Theatre Center for Education and Leadership on 10th street today. 514 Tenth Street NW is to be the future home of said Center, which is scheduled to open in 2011.
According to the website, one of the missions for the center is to “deepen visitors’ knowledge and understanding of Abraham Lincoln’s Presidency” which sounds pretty good to us.
Some might argue that Lincoln wouldn’t be thrilled with the ExxonMobil sponsonship, but we’ll leave that debate to the Lincoln historians.
**Update**
Thursday evening the sign had been rolled up, no one was around to ask about the display.
Friday morning the Post had an article about the expansion

Does anyone know if the white building in the pictures above (the building with the banner attached in the top pic and no banner in the bottom pic) is an apartment or condo building? Based on the windows, it appears it could be a residential buidling, but I have no other support for that assumption.
There’s a big shindig this morning (11-ish I think) with the mayor as some sort of kick off for the renovation. I espect the banner will be re-unfurled at that point.
Yes, at 11:30am, there will be an outdoor performance of “One Destiny,” an original play dramatizing the events surrounding Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
I believe they have tents out due to the rain.
The banner, itself, is very revealing as to what the front of 514 Tenth Street will look like. The building will be renovated, and a 4-storey glass facade installed with the two huge images of Lincoln as shown in the banner. It seems attractive to me.
I’m excited about this theatre expansion!
That’s just what I thought Otavio, it helps to see the banner in person, but if you click on the photo to view the large one you can see some of the details you mention. 2011 is a long way off, but that block of 10th ST should be really nice when it’s complete. I love having more theatres in PQ.
What a great neighborhood.
PR Newswire had a nice piece with A/V materials on this available here
Nice to see them doing something with that building. The rest of 10th street on that block is dumpy.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

there is an article in WaPo today about creating a “Lincoln Theatre campus” downtown. the timline for construction and an overview are cited in the article.
part of the upgrade includes finally, finally replacing the seats in the main theatre. I have always loved watching productions in Ford’s Theatre, but my butt and knees would never forgive me until the next day due to the 1865 style cramped seating.
