A touch of urban class came downtown with the opening of Zola Wine & Kitchen at 905 E Street, NW (northeast corner of 9th and E Streets). We mentioned the W (wine) portion of ZWK opening in our December 1 story but we didn’t touch on the K (Kitchen) portion. After all, it wasn’t really open yet and the details were not available at the time. With one month of classes under their belt, the Kitchen in ZWK is up and running.
The Kitchen faces E Street and features a full commercial kitchen mated with a bar, a tastefully spaced dining area and a restroom. The first month featured an Italian themed curriculum and going forward includes cooking classes, dessert classes and wine tasting classes. From personal experience, we can vouch for the friendly staff, classes that are part participation and part demonstration and a good chance that you’ll meet a downtown neighbor or two. Everybody gets to try their own culinary hand during a class but bring a pen and pay close attention to the chef as you’ll want to capture those seemingly small but important tips that allow you to prepare the recipe as taught. Absent an Internet presence when we ran the wine focused story, Zola Wine & Kitchen now has a website.
