Zola Wine Opening Today

Posted by pqresident
December 1, 2008

Another grape option comes to fruition in the Penn Quarter today with the opening of Zola Wine and Kitchen at 9th and E Streets NW (entrance on 9th Street). As of yesterday, there was no signage on the exterior nor a mention on Zola’s website but the wine store is there and so is the sign announcing today’s opening from 11 am to 8 pm…first door on the right on 9th heading towards F from E Street around the bend from the Bruegger’s. We peeked inside through the window and the layout appears similar to stores like Best Cellars where there is one bottle of wine presented at eye level and a vertical column of that same wine available for sale. Nice wood floors, a spread of varietals and a sales counter round out what looks to be a great quick stop for those who both live and work in the core part of the PQ to pick up a bottle of vino.

A construction link history including a link to the satellite map that still shows the parcel as a parking lot (c’mon Google…time to update the image database) and one more photo follow the break.

If you visit, feel free to leave a comment with your impressions.

Thanks go out to JAG and an anonymous PQ Living reader as well as commenter Kelby for tipping us off that the opening was imminent.

History

Parking Lot – Before 2006 (Google satellite map)
Construction – April 2006
Permitting – March 2008
General Contracting – August 2008

Nice exterior wine display evoking the same multilingual theme found inside Zola.

I just dropped by Zola Wine and Kitchen during my lunch break. Apparently I was their first wine sale of the day…sweet! No, I didn’t get my picture taken or any celebration.

The store was beautiful. Clean lines with plenty of open space. The very attractive host (I’m gonna kill the name, but I believe it was Ellie) was very knowledgeable and helped me find a good bottle of Tempranillo. She says they’ll be hosting tastings and cooking classes in the shiny new kitchen attached to the shop.

It’s definitely nice having such a store in the neighborhood and a place I can buy a good bottle of wine on my walk home.

Cant wait to check it out!

This is very exciting! I love neighborhood wine stores. Can’t wait to check it out tonight.

As with Chas and Andy I can’t wait to check this out. I’ve watched the construction daily, walking from my office to Bruegger’s for my morning bagel, but was off today.

Kudos to Zola for opening the store so quickly. Beautiful space and tremendous (if pricey) wines. I understand the test kitchen is also available to rent out for gatherings.

I stoped by yesterday and was impressed. Unfortunately not many Virginia wines are offered but the prices were great and I’m so glad they will be offering tastes and classes! A great addition to the neighborhood.

I mention this not as a complaint, but for informative purposes only (and as a cross reference to another PQ Living article), Zola Wine does not allow dogs. I stopped by today to ask and was told you can’t bring them in. Again not a complaint, I don’t like to assume a dog is allowed so I wanted to check, thought I’d let the PQ readers with pets know.

Central Liquor allows (some) dogs. Just sayin…
