Posted by Columbo
May 31, 2007

Updated With Photos

Reports coming in of a stabbing on 11th & G. Right now we’re hearing it labeled as a protest related incident. Photos & additional details as they become available.

Not much to see in the photos but cop cars & yellow tape. 700 11th ST NW, protesters are often outside the building (apparently construction protesters). No official word on what went down.

According to a CNN report, they found 4 suspicous packages by the Dept of Energy and Dept of Transportation…these places were evacuated.

Apparently all is well now.

That is the Williams & Connolly building.

Which protest at 11th & G? Construction workers or Spelling Bee?

Both groups were out when I walking through that area at lunchtime.

The spelling reform folk show up every year for the spelling bee and the constuction protestors seem to have a circuit of buildings they favor as protest sites.

Comment by Columbo on May 31, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

This is the side of 11th for the construction protest, not the spelling bee (West side of the street).

Wondering if there were any reports about the stabbing at Ruby Tuesdays in teh last 10 days….

– Would you pls expand on the ruby tuesday stabbing?

Comment by Anonymous on June 1, 2007 @ 11:44 am

A few weeks ago, at night, there was police tape across the 7th Street sidewalk preventing access to Ruby Tuesdays and the storefronts around it. I spoke to a guy on the street who told me there had been a fight at Ruby Tuesdays and that someone was stabbed.

7th Street between H and F turns into “gansta fest” every weekend, and it continues to get worse. I imagine this summer will bring many similar unfortunate events. One of the downsides of being on the Green Line is that the neighborhood turns into the stomping ground for all the hood rats whose parents (or parent) could care less where they are or what they are doing. On one positive note, I have seen a greater police presence but the sad thing is that it is only reactionary due to these type of events.

I agree that 7th and H St is becoming a hangout for thugs from throughout the Metro area. Whatever ones feelings are for Giuliani’s tactics in turning NYC crime problem around those tactics need to be adopted here. I remember when you could walk through this area without watching your back, it is horrible now. Development for development sake is not all good. Clean up this area asap…..PS. this message needs to be heeded to Chief Lanier, Head of the DC Police Department.

I don’t live in GP (but in Upper NW) and used to come here often for the movies, bowling, dining, etc… on the weekends. My last couple trips to the area, however, have been extremely unpleasant. When I got off the Metro at 7th and H St, NW on a Saturday night, I thought I was in Anacostia with all the thugs around. Two of them were yelling at each other, screaming profanities and I felt very unsafe with my girlfriend. All you need in GP is rival gangs to go at it in your neighborhood and start pulling guns. As the last poster stated, a serious police patrol appears to be necessary now that this is turning into a hangout for thugs. I doubt these people live in your neighborhood and they will merely bring trouble and tank real estate values.

I think that a lot of people forget that 7th & H is a transit hub – not just for trains, but also for buses. The 70, 71, 80, X2, P6, G8, and Circulator all stop at 7th & H. And people who are waiting underneath the Metro canopy for those buses are from all over the city, NE, SW, SE, NW – yes, even Anacostia. People may look like they’re hanging out, but a vast majority are actually waiting for the bus.

One of the great things about the intersection is that people from all over the city travel through here. Maybe that’s why there are so many free-hand-out marketing campaigns performed here.

It is interesting to hear about everyone’s anxiety around the intersection because no-one seems to be 100% comfortable.

Comment by Andy in PQ on June 4, 2007 @ 1:23 pm

If you think a metro line causes crime, you know nothing about crime and certainly nothing about public transportation. Metro buses and trains hardly make good getaway vehicles.

If you look at the crime reports, I’d say much of your fear is irrational. Sure there are some robberies, some theft, and even some assaults. But comparatively, we’re doing really well.

As for some of these comments, I am deeply saddened by the racist undertones some people are expressing…”When I got off the Metro at 7th and H St, NW on a Saturday night, I thought I was in Anacostia with all the thugs around”…. Are you kidding me? You got off a train and were able to assess that people were thugs from Anacostia? It seems blatantly racist to me.

Andy in PQ: you’re just too sensitive, get off your high horse and stop calling others racist.

I read the previous comments, I am African-American and I was not offended at all. It’s true, thugs do frequent our neighborhood who do not live here and cause trouble. As for looking at the crime reports, I see 12 violent crimes committed within 1000 feet of 7th and H Streets as well as 8 assaults with a deadly weapon in the last 60 days. That is more than 1 ADW every 10 days.

Give me a break!

Comment by gpliving on June 4, 2007 @ 2:45 pm

In regard to the last comment, the poster was citing 2006 stats. The 2007 stats for the last 60 days are significantly less than 2006. There were 9 total violet crimes with 3 assaults w/ deadly weapon in the last 60 days. That amounts to 1.5 ADW per month.

There’s a lot of loitering at 7th & H, largely because of the transportation, but nearly all the time it’s no worse than you would find in most suburban malls in the evening. I agree with Andy that some comments here have been intolerant and stereotypical bordering on racist, but maybe we have a different definition of ‘thug’? I’m in that area at all hours, and always feel safe near 7th & H.

Comment by pqresident on June 4, 2007 @ 8:30 pm

I regularly walk through that intersection at all times of day and night. There are lots of people in that vicinity because it is a transit hub – all colors, races, ages, shapes and sizes – but I never came away with the impression that they are thugs. Panhandlers, yes. People waiting for the bus, absolutely. Thugs, no.
