URFA Tomato Kabob Restaurant on 6th St NW

This restaurant seems to have opened in February of this year, so while it is not new news, we thought we’d mention it on the blog. URFA Tomato Kabob replaced the old Cafe Deli business at 740 6th St NW. Yelp has some reviews.

I miss Cafe Deli. I’d been going there for lunch – always getting Orange Beef – for almost 15 years. I’m convinced they put crack in it.
I try to avoid foods like industrially processed “mystery” meat that typically have more sodium and fat than 3 people should consume in a day.
I just wish they served kabobs. Don’t expect to get a typical kabob if you order one (I think they lack the right ovens to make good kabobs). It is really gyro meat sliced up and served over regular bread and some kind of tomato sauce. Not good in my opinion.
Haven’t tried the kabobs yet. Tried the falafel sandwich, which they served on a hamburger bun (guess they haven’t discovered pita bread). Yech; won’t be getting that again.
I got the Euro Doner sandwich (with fries inside). Not the obscene portions I’m used to, but lots of good flavor. Particularly liked that they threw in tzaziki AND spicy red sauce. The “pita” wasn’t the thin stuff you get at the grocery store. It was still pocket bread, but it was chewy and thick, almost like panini bread except not oily. Really helped keep the sandwich together. A steal at $6 and the owner seems like a really nice guy, unlike certain other places where showing up and giving them my money seems like a real f**king burden to them.

I’ve been several times for lunch. I really like the place and the donor combo’s are pretty reasonable. My only question now is, when do we get a good, cheap pizza join in PQ/Chinatown?
