YWCA Fitness & Aquatics Center Announces Pool Closing In Gallery Place
Jackie writes in to inform us that the Gallery Place YWCA Fitness & Aquatics Center (624 9th St NW) will be closing its pool for good on August 26, 2006.
She writes, “This is sad news since several local residents use this pool regularly. Is there anyway that we could convince them not to close the pool?”
We note that while many high-rise condominiums have their own pools, these pools are only about 3.5 feet deep and are not conducive to lap swimming. The YWCA pool is a standard lap pool. The only other lap pool that we know of in the Gallery Place/Penn Quarter area is contained in the Lansburgh apartment building and it is not public. The YWCA website lists the YMCA pool at 1711 Rhode Island Avenue NW as an alternative.

Renaissance Techworld 999 9th St NW has a pool 17 meters and a gym open to the public for membership. Hours 5:30AM -11:00PM, 7 days a week. Vida Fitness will have 2 endless pools. I haven’t checked out all of the health clubs/hotel fitness centers/pools in the area. How is everyone finding the clubs they belong to?
Everyone is encouraged to email the YWCA to ask them to not close the pool. Michael Stewart is the general manager of the YWCA and his email address is: mstewart@ywcanca.org and to Beverly Smith at bsmith@ywcanca.org. There is also a member meeting at the YWCA on Thursday, August 10th, from 12 noon – 1:00 pm and from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm to discuss the pool closure.
they are keeping the pool open for now and raising the fees to 60$ a month. apparently, the maintenance bills were too much… check out their website or call for more info. http://www.ywcanca.org

Very sad. I had never used the YWCA pool, but always thought it would be a good reason to join.
The Vida will have endless pools, btw.
