Posted by gpliving
March 21, 2008

Scanning this week’s DCRA permits yielded the following info:
The space at the corner of 10th & F St (which hosts the window decal of a woman’s face) is getting started with construction of the Peruvian Connection store. The store will occupy the first floor and the basement level. We wrote about the lease [...]

Nice Cans!

Posted by Columbo
March 20, 2008

For the last month or so the National Park Service has been replacing the garbage cans on the Mall.  Above you see the newly installed cans, bolted down to a freshly laid patch of cement.  While not showy, these cans certainly look ready to take on the litter of the hordes who utilize the mall.
The [...]

Platinum Nightclub Swimming With The Fishes

Posted by gpliving
March 19, 2008

Thanks to Caroline, who runs the Beyond Friendship Gate blog, for this picture of Platinum’s front door.
Last year, Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham started a trend in DC. If there is a stabbing or shooting related to a nightclub, that club will be shut down and have its liquor license revoked. Graham did [...]

The Ice Cream Man?

Posted by Columbo
March 18, 2008

We spotted this truck at 11th & G on Monday afternoon. The truck was parked right next to the hot dog vendor on the same corner. The truck was playing It’s a Small World (turn down your speakers) which was reason enough to not investigate further. Anyone ever seen this in the [...]

Penn Quarter Neighborhood Maps From The Past!

Posted by gpliving
March 17, 2008

Ever wonder what the neighborhood looked like just a few years ago? We’ve noticed that the mapping engines of several websites hold data for varying years. Zillow.com seems to have the oldest (pre-2003) maps, while Microsoft’s local.live seems to have the most recent. Check out the following screen captures:
First up is Zillow’s [...]

Cribs VIII: Vaunted Vista

Posted by pqresident
March 15, 2008

This installation of Cribs is notable for two reasons.
The first reason is the view from the balcony. Unit #1025 is at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, and it looks to be a the end unit of in Market Square West East with some great views of the Washington Monument and the Archives building. Condo fees are [...]

Her Haunting Eyes Follow Me Wherever I Go

Posted by Columbo
March 14, 2008

I think we can all agree that few things say “DC” more than Whoopi Goldberg. Why who could forget Whoopi hosting TNT’s “A Very Special Christmas From Washington, DC” back in 1998?
So I guess it should come as no surprise that Madame Tussauds chooses to sit Whoopi outside their museum almost EVERY SINGLE DAY. I [...]
