Nats Prez Plays PQ Resident For A Day

Stan Kasten, president of the Washington Nationals baseball team, was seen last Wednesday riding the Metro. He was promoting mass transit as a way to get to the baseball game for this upcoming season.

What’s interesting is that the trek started at the Gallery Place station and went to the Navy Yard station. Kasten could have taken the Metro from L’Enfant Plaza (another transfer point) and saved himself 3 – 4 minutes, but no. He wanted to see what it was like to be a Penn Quarter resident for a day! That’s right folks, Kasten demonstrated the 7 minute commute to Nationals baseball park from Penn Quarter. As a reward for making the round-trip journey (yes, he took the yellow green line back to Gallery Place) we would like to declare Stan Kasten an honorary PQ resident!

Kasten was also sporting a new Nats-branded SmarTrip card. For all of you residents who want matching cards in your wallet, the Nats SmarTrip card is a perfect companion to your red American Express card! It also pairs with the Centurion Card quite nicely. But, we strongly recommend against pairing the Nats SmarTrip card with AMEX Green or Blue cards.

Check out the Nats320 blog for loads of pics.

BTW – Opening day of the ballpark is this Sunday.

Pretty cool….

They are probably not going to be very good and I think I overpaid for my season tix but I am psyched about openining day at the new stadium nonetheless, Go Nats!

Slight correction…he would have had to take the Green Line, since the Yellow Line doesn’t go to the Navy Yard station.

Comment by joe on March 27, 2008 @ 8:00 am

Slight correction? heh heh heh green or yellow, it’s just a small difference.
The Nationals are going to be bad again. These cheap corporate welfare owners have killed the fan base here. The city wastes $611 million on a new stadium & these welfare cheats get to profit. Abe built the Verizon Center with his own money; the SF Giants built their new stadium with private money; why couldn’t these corporate welfare cheats build the stadium with their own money? Stan Kasten an honorary PQ resident? No thanks.
I liked the Nationals back when Frank Robbie was manager, before this new ownership, but no longer. Nationals stink – hope they lose 100 games…

And the PQ Living killjoys are on the case!

Comment by Adam on March 27, 2008 @ 8:49 am

Killed the fan base? Have you walked around DC at all recently? I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people with Nats caps on since their inaugural year. I for one am glad that baseball is only a short metro ride away. Maybe all the increased metro traffic to/from games will decrease their $244M maintenance shortfall. Oh wait- Metro be fiscally responsible?! What am I saying!

neighbor: Thanks! All of that talk about Kasten wanting to get on a yellow line train mixed me up.

Where do you get a Nats Smarttrip?

Comment by neighbor on March 27, 2008 @ 10:57 am

“why couldn’t these corporate welfare cheats build the stadium with their own money?”

Because MLB wouldn’t have moved the Expos here in the first place without the city ponying up for the stadium. MLB sold the team to Kasten long after the deal was in place and the team had already moved here. So while I agree that it’s ideal for the teams to build their own, it wasn’t an option in this case. The real alternative would have been for the city to tell MLB to shove it and have no team. But the city saw it as an investment in redevelopment. We will see over the next few years whether it will pay dividends or not, I suppose.

#7 – I bought mine at the metro online store.

#5 – correct! I’ve noticed also how many more people are walking around with curly W hats. Here’s to hoping that #3 stays far away from Nationals Park this year. Let us enjoy the team and nice new stadium.

The city has been reportedly working on plans for a new route for its special red Circulator buses, which would run between Union Station (which has a Metro Red Line station), the new visitors’ center at the U.S. Capitol, the Capitol South Metro station on the Blue/Orange lines, and the ballpark. No start date has been officially announced, though it’s been said that the route could be running by the end of 2008.

Comment by LiveAndWorkinPQ on March 28, 2008 @ 4:04 pm

#11 – I have been thinking that the North / South Circulator that runs down 9th street and then to the Waterfront was a perfect candidate to extend to the stadium. It already gets within 3/4 of a mile or so. All they would have to to is add one last stop at the Stadium on game nights.

It probably won’t do any good but I think I will write a letter to Metro.
