How Do PQ Residents Get Their Thanksgiving Day Turkey?

Posted by gpliving

In a neighborhood without a grocery store, we have to ask: How’s that turkey getting to your Thanksgiving day dinner table?

Well, I’m no longer in DC… but the place I’m getting the turkey from in NYC ships everywhere. Jive turkey (http://www.thejiveturkey.com/). Mmmmm deep fried turkey!

Mrs Columbo & I have hit the Citronelle T-Day buffet a few times over the years. It’s in the $80 a person range, so not cheap, but what a feast.

The biggest downside to going out to eat for t-day is the lack of leftovers. Anytime we go out for t-day I usually still end up making a bird with stuffing that night, so I can have leftovers for the football feast that long weekend.

Are you serious?

Headed to North Carolina to mom and dads for a big feast with the family.

Aside from not having leftovers, aren’t all of those restaurants a rather stale setting for Thanksgiving. What about spending time with family in the warmth of a home?

It may be lowbrow, but a Butterball works well enough for me.

I usually cook a vegetarian feast, or make crab cakes (currently, I still eat seafood). I usually get everything from Whole Foods and Harris Teeter. When my family members come into town, usually at least one of them brings or rents a car, so we can make those kind of grocery trips!

Oh, wait, I often get stuff (including crab meat) from the fabulous Giant at Van Ness. For that, I can take the Metro. I love that Giant!

Anyway, we were thinking about going out this year just for a change of pace, but everything is probably booked by now.

Harris Teeter in Pentagon City has a great selection.

Deliverd by Peapod/Giant tonight. Will cook it myself with my great grandmother’s cornbread stuffing.

Georgia Browns! You can eat there (and take home leftovers!!!) or pick up to take home (something they started last years).

PS – They serve deep fried turkey. Yummmmm! And, no risk of starting a fire (see comments about fireplaces) !

I go to my favorite restaurant – my best friends’ home in Takoma Park! These guys make a feast for the big group of friends that they invite every year and everyone brings a side dish. Otherwise, I would shop for everything at the Giant in Columbia Heights. Love that store!

Last year I order a smoked turkey from Greenburg’s in Tyler, Texas. It was very tasty, with that unique smoked flavor (no cooking necessary at home).

This year we’re ordering a fresh, organic turkey from DC’s own Wagshal’s:
http://www.wagshals.com/

We’ll (my wife) be cooking it using Todd English’s boned, rolled, stuffed and tied recipe:

From my father-in-law, who lives out in the wild Midwest, where the grocery stores grow like weeds. He’s a pretty good cook.

This year I’m planning to try the frozen vegan turkey roast (i think it is ‘Qorn’ brand) they sell at Whole Foods. I can send in my review to let you know how that goes.

We’ll have turkey dinner here at the house for about 12 or so. I think were getting a butter ball from HT. I’m making the cranberry sauce, the banana nut bread and the butter milk mashed potatoes.

Driving to Wegmans in Fairfax. Fresh kosher turkeys = already brined = good turkey

Comment by Linda on November 15, 2007 @ 8:41 am

Well, this year we are skipping the calories. We will flying out thanksgiving day to France.
We will be meeting up with some good friends, and spending those saved calories on French cuisine and pastries. Ooh la la.

Will probably prepare a traditional turkey dinner when we return, a few weeks later.

Enjoy everyone.

FYI, Teeter still has a stock of turduckens.

Comment by Columbo on November 15, 2007 @ 12:50 pm

Ah the turduckens, where is John Madden when you need him?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
