Regarding Sunday Hours
We at Penn Quarter Living like to think of ourselves as aspiring renaissance men (or women). We’re trying to embrace all the arts, not just painting & sculpture, but also culinary, fashion, and more. We also love sports and fitness, which is the crux of what prompts this open letter.
To start off, we’re big fans of the DC Public Library. The collection & services offered are fantastic, so we were thrilled to see that the library was again going to be open on Sundays. But we’re concerned about the library’s choice of hours for Sundays: 1 to 5 pm. These new hours began on Sunday, September 7th, which also coincided with the first weekend of NFL Football. What time does NFL football begin? 1 pm.
You, DC Public Library, are asking us to choose between watching (lets say) the Buccaneers (and all the libations that entails) or picking up a book to read that night. If you’ve ever been a Buccaneers fan (or in the last decade, a Redskins fan) you know that a distraction is needed after the Sunday games. Sure you could argue that most 1 pm games are over by 4, which still gives us an hour to visit the library. But that ignores the 4 pm games not to mention overtime. The reality is that for aspiring renaissance persons such as us, we need hours open before 1 pm.
We’re sure a lot of thought went into picking these Sunday hours, but we at Penn Quarter Living hope that you’d reconsider and open an hour or two before the start of Football. It’s not that we don’t want to read and utilize the library’s services, but you should probably never ask someone to choose between the library and the NFL.

Alternatively, why not suggest that the library install a wide screen TV? It could sponsor “Read and Watch NFL Sundays.”
A big screen TV may may bring in new people to the library, and expose them to the wonderful world of books during half-time. This is a win-win.
