Best Savory Deal In Town*
About a month ago we told you what we thought was the best deal in town. While not everyone agreed with us it did make for a lively discussion. Today we’re breaking down the categories a bit more and offering up our opinion on the best savory deal in town: Proof’s full charcuterie ($28) with three cheeses ($13). For $41 you get mounds of meat, a reasonable amount of cheese, all the toasted bread you can eat, sugar dates, and various condiments ranging from sweet to tangy.
We’re not in the tank for Proof, in fact we’re not that fond of anything else on their menu (save the wine). We’ve had a full dinner there several times and have usually come away disappointed. But when we go and sit at the bar with the charcuterie & cheese combo we’re reminded of why we love this restaurant. Anytime we can get away with paying $41 for two people for dinner (and really there is enough meat for three on the board) in PQ we feel like we’re doing ok. Of course the wine sets us back quite a bit, but you can’t wash Serrano ham down with a glass of water.
* We realize that our best savory deal is not vegetarian friendly. We’ll do a “best vegetarian deal in town” one of these days.

I’ve had Proof’s charcuterie a few times and always enjoy it. So I agree with Columbo’s recommendation that it’s a good deal. That said, I’d like to see all the restaurants serving charcuterie engage in some sort of cage match, with the best one or two getting to keep it on their menu. We can do the same thing for all the bars and restaurants that have gone Belgium in the last few years. I realize that when a concept works well for one restaurant others will adopt it. But the prolifieration of meat platters and Belgium joints is getting out of hand.
I really like Proof – the charcuterie is exllent. However, my favorite item on the menu is their Pannacotta dessert, which is out of this WORLD….amazingly good. I often go in there just to have the Pannacotta and nothing else
We have also had great service at Proof. I think they are a great addition to the neighborhood. I just wish the patio was open for lunch
I have to stick up for Proof and say I have eaten meals off the dinner menu a couple of times and really think their food is excellent relative to other similar restaurants in the area. I think they are at a similar level to Marcel’s, and in my opinion are far better than places like Zola or IndieBlue. Their $12 power lunch is also an incredible deal in my opinion.
My wife and I have been very happy with the meals we’ve had at Proof. In fact, this post is the first time I’ve heard anyone hold the food there in such low regard. It’s not the best restaurant in town, but we’ve enjoyed our experiences there and always walk out happy.
Anonymous 10:35 – for a budget pick, try bin 941 from Australia, the Kaesler Stonehorse GSM at $44. GSM = grenache, shiraz and mourvedre
I’ve been meaning to return to Proof to eat the charcuterie. It was SO good the last time I ate there.
I really like Proof’s food too! I eat there regularly and can’t remember being disappointed. I always order fish. The service can be flaky, but my food has always been good.
Wow, I got to jump on the Proof bandwagon here too. Excellent food, excellent wine. Pretty soon, they will have an even better cocktail program.
BTW, Central charcuterie plate is $22 — plenty for 2.
Charcuterie board at Proof is awesome. It beats both Vinoteca and Sonoma in price, quantity, and quality.

Maybe it is a matter of taste — I’m a huge addict of Proof’s entree and appetizer menu. I have had consistent great meals and have only been disappointed once. And the service is always excellent.
