Cedar To Open On Monday?

Posted by Columbo
May 10, 2009

Unnamed sources (ok, it was Mrs Columbo) overheard a conversation on the street in front of Cedar (822 E St NW) late last week about their opening plans.  According to what she heard there would be a soft opening Friday (last Friday, May 8th) and then they would open to the public on Monday, May 11th.

We were not in PQ Friday night; did anyone notice activity at Cedar to indicate a soft opening?  Assuming they do open Monday, do any of our readers plan to attend their opening night?

We walked by last night, and they were open and serving dinner. The hostess gave us a menu. It’s on the pricier side, but it looks nice.

According to the Washington Business Journal, they’re opening tomorrow and will be open 7 days a week serving lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. More info here: http://washington.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2009/05/11/daily8.html?surround=lfn

Doors were propped open today (Monday the 11th), seemed ready to serve customers. Small place, picked up a menu – which changes daily according to the hostess – cuisine was contemporary with interesting mix of flavors. Appetizers (carpaccio, crab, bean salad, pea soup…) $8-12, entrees (salmon, chicken, pork, steak, tuna, quail..) $20-30, desserts $8 Also lists a website and ph: http://www.cedardc.com 202.637.0012

Looks quite expensive, hopefully they have a happy hour.

I just called them, they do not have a happy hour.

Cedar is definitely open now as I dropped by for dinner last night. lunch is planned to start in the next week or two at some point…they’ve got a basic dinner service going (apps, entrees, desserts, wine and beer) and will gradually build up from there. although there is no natural light, the interior is tastefully done. staff was friendly. will check it out again in a month or so to get a better read. as JAG said above, website is now up.

I really enjoyed the food there. I had the opportunity to try both the bar menu and the dinner menu. From the bar menu, I really liked the risotto bites, fries, and the porkbelly BLT. The bar nibblets are a bit unusual compared to regular bar items but these are superdelicious. I really like the wine selections as well.

As for the dinner menu, I’ve tried the fluke carpaccio, fava bean salad, and the green pea soup. Green pea soups is a fantastic tasting as well as very visually pleasing.

From the entree portion, I tried the NY strip steak, quail, and Ahi Tuna. These were all well made and presented exquisitely. The chef definitely understand that food has to be visually pleasing as well as tasty.

To finish off the meal, I had the carrot cake. It was the BEST cake I’ve ever had. The Rocky Road Brownie also looked so decadent. They had one sorbet (mango) but I understand there will be new flavors rotating through.

Overall, I really liked the dining experience at Cedar. The management is friendly and attentive. The chef has creativity and excellent culinary insight to execute his art. I am sold on this place and will look forward to the next meal at Cedar.

I think a promoter, owner or manager for Cedar has infiltrated the blog.

after consuming three bar nibblets, three appetizers, three entrees and a dessert in one night, Anon 5/16-8:39 sure must have been full. that’s quite a bit of food for one person in one night.

I can vouch for the friendly staff correlating to Anon 5/16-8:39′s comments but I didn’t eat any of the entrees as they were mostly in the mid-$20s which to me isn’t casual dining. can’t imagine that any restaurant reveals its true character until at least a month or two of operation. am reserving final thoughts until I stock up on Jacksons and another visit or two. PQ Living will do a more thorough review once we’ve gotten a better impression.
