Chains Vs. Local Retail In DC
Jason sends us a link to a WaPo article talking about the debate of chains vs. local retail stores.
It’s a nice read about retail events happening in Dupont Circle, our neighbor to the northwest.
Gallery Place does have its fair share of retail chains, but the greater Penn Quarter area also has a nice representation from local retailers (mostly in the form of restaurants).

We do need a hardware store. I love the Logan Hardware store. It’s so clean and the staff are very helpful. I went to Frager’s a lot on the hill but it was more cramped, less clean and a lot less helpful.
Logan Hardware is the most overpriced hardware store I have ever seen. $20 for a shower curtain liner. All I’m gonna say. A basic, cheap plastic shower curtain liner. No thanks. If local businesses want to stay in business, they better stop ripping folks off, otherwise I’ll be driving to Potomac Yards in VA to shop for household items.
For a “basic, cheap plastic shower curtain liner,” you can go to that “suburban, Fairfax” store everyone on here loves to criticize: Bed Bath and Beyond. It’s right on 7th street. As for Logan Hardware, I don’t think there HARDWARE is out of control expensive. I don’t know about their decorator stuff (shower liners and patio furniture) but their nails, handles, hammers and the like are not too bad.
This neighborhood definitely needs a hardware store, although there probably aren’t as many fixer-uppers around to demonstrate a need for it. I would never call Logan Hardware cheap, but they are much more convenient and MUCH more pleasant that a trek over to Home Depot. As Andy said, their actual hardware/plumbing departments are on the par with other urban retailers.
FYI, there’s a new Ace Hardware on the lower level of the old Hechingers at the Tenleytown metro. It’s a long trip, but very convenient to the metro (unlike Home Depot)–with the added bonus of the Whole Foods across the street.
if it is any consolation, there is a Home Depot, a stone’s throw from the Brookland metro stop. Can’t beat Home Depot prices but again can’t beat personal service of these independent hardware stores
Pray, how is an owner supposed to pay his exorbitant P Street rent WITHOUT charging $20 for shower curtains?
That’s the thing about gentrification. The quality of the shopping goes up, and so does the price.
btw, the Home Depot is a “stone’s throw” (across a sometimes-vicious parking lot) from the Rhode Island Ave metro, not Brookland.
Try Frager’s Hardware on Capitol Hill. It’s in DC. It’s locally owned. It’s terrific.

It’s far better than Home Depot.
Hello. I am the owner of Logan Hardware and hope you all have found my $4.99 shower liner. We have sold more 500 since we opened. My staff is happy to find almost anything you are looking for in a wide range of prices.
I have to side with Gina from Logan Hardware here. I was tempted to say that Logan Hardware would automatically be more expensive then home depot when they first opened. But almost all of their prices are very fair. And given their downtown location, any slightly higher price makes complete sense (and would even out after gas).

I was sad to read that my favorite hardware store, the True Value on P Street around 21st (District HW? The one with the bicycle shop) may be moving out. Maybe we can entice them to come to Penn Quarter???? We need a hardware store!
