RSS FeedClyde’s On The Walk Gone For Certain?
If you follow Clyde’s restaurant around the corner into the G Street alley (otherwise known as the walkway to the entrance of the Gallery Place mall), you’ll find Clyde’s On The Walk. It is the arm of Clyde’s restaurant that operates mostly during lunch hours and serves prepared foods. Every year (usually in the summer), Clyde’s On The Walk adjusts its hours – usually reducing them. In the past, it has been explained that the reduction in hours was only due to seasonal demand, and the restaurant has reverted back to extended hours in the fall.
We noticed that Clyde’s On The Walk had a different kind of notice posted on its windows. The notice said “Clyde’s On The Walk will be closing Friday, October 9th, at 2pm.” A few weeks later, we snapped a pic of the construction scene behind a couple of the windows that weren’t covered up. We also got wind of scheduled construction that is occurring in the space today.
One could only hope that Clyde’s is just renovating the space to emerge as an improved Clyde’s On The Walk in the future. But, we can’t help but wonder if the space will turn into an extended dining space for the main restaurant.

this was a good inexpensive & delicious place to get a breakfast sandwich but they weren’t open on weekends!
My hope is that they will somehow make that portion of the restaurant open to the sidewalk, for those nice afternoon and evenings when you just want to be outside. Penn Quarter needs more places to sit outside!
Part of their business model was to have a place to eat after you picked up a quick meal. Unfortunately, some of those tables were frequently occupied by people just lounging around (despite signs indicating that the table were for customers only). I’m sure it took constant policing to try to keep them clear. Probably wasn’t worth the time and money. This was also probably damaging their brand. Remember the tables at Chipotle?
If they (the city) would clean up the trash that hangs out in that area during evenings and weekends, Clyde’s and others could have some outdoor seating without the headaches of keeping them clear for patrons.
From what I understand, the space will become more bar space. But, that was only a comment from one of the people who worked in (the former) Clyde’s on the Walk, not from someone in management.
The concept was great, though the seating inside was never quite comfortable, even if just for a quick meal before a game. It will be dearly missed. Maybe Clyde’s could put together a dedicated takeout window – they would do killer business.
I’ll miss the crab cakes at lunch, but not what had to be the surliest service people in the neighborhood. I quit going there because I was tired of screwed up orders and then being berated because they f’d it up and that was somehow my fault. I love being given my lunch with a heaping helping of attitude and under the breath comments.
Speaking of trash, the city needs to enact a special tax on the McDonald’s on 7th to cleanup all the garbage the animals leave all over the steps of the National Portrait Gallery. Every Saturday and Sunday morning the steps of that beautiful building look like the Staten Island Dump.
I’m willing to bet the Downtown BID takes care of the steps trash and they levy a charge on businesses in the area so you might say a special tax is being applied.

According to their event planner, Terri, Clydes’ on the Walk is closed and the space will be added to the restaurant. To bad.
