From Pho To Pizza (736 6th St NW)

Posted by gpliving
February 10, 2010

PQL reader, Andrew, wrote in to let us know that on his way to work he spotted a change in restaurants in the neighborhood. We still aren’t 100% certain of the official name of the former restaurant because the sign stated Pho Sai Gon & Grill, while Yelp lists it as Jack’s Vietnamese Restaurant Saigon Capitol Cuisine (736 6th St NW). We just used to call it “the pho restaurant.”

According to a couple of snapshots that Andrew sent in, the Pho restaurant has now become Pizza Bistro Med. $3.50 gets you a slice of a cheese pie. No kidding – we had to visit the place ourselves just so that we could see it with our own eyes!  The pizzeria is quite a departure from the line of asian restaurants that occupy the row of houses on the northern part of 6th St NW between G & H.  Could this be the start of a trend for that section of 6th St?

Opening a new restaurant this week, with all of the snow, earns this pizza shop our Most Daring Restaurant Opening award!

OMG!!! Slices in Chinatown!
That’s going to be my first stop after the blizzard.
Has anybody ate there yet? Good pizza or Adams Morgan type big but not good slices?

Comment by muckraker on February 10, 2010 @ 12:54 pm

Yeah, sounds like a good neighborhood addition to me.

Comment by Anonymous on February 10, 2010 @ 3:48 pm

Finally! Its about time, Chinatown got pizza slices!

Comment by jpq on February 10, 2010 @ 6:18 pm

FYI, there’s great pizza by the slice at Manhattan Deli in the 801 Pennsylvania Ave building. But sadly not open past around 6:00 pm on weekdays. Agree that big slices of pizza are a great addition to the nightlife of our area!

Comment by Anonymous on February 10, 2010 @ 6:38 pm

Too bad that previous business didn’t know how to make good Pho. Otherwise, they probably would have been very busy.

Comment by Anon on February 11, 2010 @ 7:37 am

not sure you would get wide agreement that there is “great pizza by the slice at Manhattan Deli” –especially if you have been to Rome, NYC, or New Haven.

Comment by Andy in PQ on February 11, 2010 @ 8:55 am

I’ve been to all those places, and I agree that Manhattan Deli’s pizza is pretty good. It may not be perfection, but it’s better than most of the other “NY Pizza” you can get outside NYC.

Comment by Cheryl on February 11, 2010 @ 10:46 am

Manhattan Deli is owned by a New Yorker and it’s decent. At the old post office pavillion they sell slices, which is okay. For slices in DC or close-by,I like Vace, Zpizza is good, but the best right now is Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza in Columbia Heights. They are planning on opening another shop, hope it’s in PQ.

Comment by PQ Observer on February 11, 2010 @ 12:03 pm

I have begged Manhattan Deli for years to deliver their pizza or have later hours. Their pizza is, IMHO, the most NY-like that you can find in DC. I am thrilled to hear other local experts agree. They must make too much money with their lunch business. I wish the new pizza place good luck – I tried a slice, it was okay. Hope they continue to work on improving their dough, sauce and cheese mix. Expensive. But, I will enjoy it and support them.

Comment by Stoli-Canoli on February 11, 2010 @ 6:02 pm

Manhattan Deli is way overrated and expensive. But that’s not the worst of it, the employees are surly, they only take cash-no debit cards, and no free soda refills! I will check out the new place for sure.

Comment by Jon on February 12, 2010 @ 1:40 pm

I stopped by the Pizza Bistro Med last night — they were putting final touches on decor. The pizza under the heat lamp looked like it had been sitting under the lights for some time, and to be honest — looked boring (flat, not bubbly crust, no spices in the sauce). I left before ordering, as there was no place to sit (they were bolting together bar stools).

For good pizza that is open late(ish) — try Pizza Pino at 13th and G — NY-style pies which are rather good with a chewy crust. They do not deliver, but are open til late (I think 11pm.)

Why can’t we get a greasy Jumbo Slice imitator in the ‘hood? They’d make a fortune after the bars close.

Comment by WorkerBinPQ on February 14, 2010 @ 1:46 pm

Stoli-Canoli is right on. Manhattan Deli is the worst. In every way.

Comment by Anon on February 14, 2010 @ 6:44 pm

Their pizza is good, the stools very comfy. They also have salads, soups and such. I intend to eat there a lot.

Comment by gallery place dude on February 14, 2010 @ 7:38 pm

I went there today and the slices were decent, I think its a vast improvement over most DC pizza places, Matchbox and Ella’s don’t count because they serve thin expensive pizza to yuppies.

Comment by pizza man on February 15, 2010 @ 5:17 pm

Had a slice earlier this afternoon. Tasted fine — nothing spectacular, but perfectly good. I thought the price was a bit much: $3.50 for a cheese slice, $3.75 for slices with toppings.

Comment by Lauren on February 15, 2010 @ 7:19 pm

Do they deliver? I haven’t been able to find any contact info. We’re in Chinatown with a baby soon arriving and would love a decent delivery option. Other delivery suggestions welcome.

Comment by David on February 15, 2010 @ 8:45 pm

Gallery place dude way to call out people that choose to dine at Matchbox. Once again this blog continues to serve as a forum to one up other neighbors. As someone that grew up in Brooklyn eating great pizza I think Matchbox is just fine. I personally like Vapiano the best.

Comment by Seth on February 15, 2010 @ 10:31 pm

Why anyone would eat pizza at Matchbox when Ella’s is a couple blocks away is beyond me. I guess Matchbox has a better scene if you like waiting for a table to eat a nasty burnt pizza that tastes like it came from the freezer aisle.

Comment by David on February 16, 2010 @ 11:15 am

Ellas is an overpriced tourist trap… locals know to go to Matchbox when there isn’t a two hour wait. The best pizza is Flippin’ in Bethesda… closest pizza to NYC.

Comment by Cheryl on February 16, 2010 @ 4:00 pm

Lauren, after they have their menus, they will start delivery service and accept all cards except for AMEX.

Flippin is opening in Dupont Circle, website says coming soon, will try it.

Comment by FourthandEye on February 16, 2010 @ 4:04 pm

Best pizza by the slice is very subjective of course… but my money is on the Italian Store in Arlington. Inside the district it’d be Pete’s APizza. Flippin and Pizza Autentica are very Sbarros-esque to me with Flippin being a little better and Autentica being a little worse.

I’m going off on a bit off the reservation on this one… but are there any former Richmonders here who used to get Pizza by the Slice from the “Pizza Nazi” in Shockoe Bottom? Atleast that’s what he was called in the late 90’s due to his similarity to the infamous Seinfeld Soup Nazi.

Comment by pqresident on February 16, 2010 @ 4:15 pm

I give Matchbox a small edge over Ella’s. both are just fine. that said, I do have a hankering for a slice and not a whole pie every now and then so will be checking out Bistro Med.

Comment by Gallery Place Dude on February 16, 2010 @ 6:22 pm

Ellas and Matchbox have good pizza, but its not the same as NY style. I think that is the point everyone, including myself, is trying to make here. More options in the neighborhood are a great thing, maybe a real late night diner can open too?

Comment by Anon on February 16, 2010 @ 8:00 pm

Had a slice of cheese today. Its a pretty good basic slice with not too much greasy feel (some crispness in crust and cheese). Decent spice in the sauce. Good enough for me for lunch and would probably soak up some of the late night beer overdose feeling after a night out. Forgot to ask how late its open.

Does anyone remember the free pizza slices at Ellas at happy hour a few years ago. Dems were the days (as long as you didnt get trampled dashing for the free slices when they came out of the kitchen every 15 minw0.

Comment by (proud yuppie) on February 17, 2010 @ 10:36 am

in the style of matchbox & ella’s, how come noone’s mentioned 2 amys? best thin crust hands down. too bad it’s soooo far away.

anyways, has anyone tried the falafel or “bistro med” part of pizza bistro med? it would be cool if there was a fusion pizza…

Comment by anti yuppie on February 17, 2010 @ 1:59 pm

2 Amy’s is great pizza, but again, its not available downtown. It would be nice if we could get some calzones, strombolis, and cannolis at Bistro Med in the future. The Italian Store in Arlington has the best all around Italian food in the DC area, it would be great if they could open a store in DC.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
