Howto: Renting In Gallery Place/Penn Quarter
Sometimes, the bloggers at GPLiving feel like ambassadors of the neighborhood. We receive a wide range of questions in our email box and we’re happy to answer them all! One recent question we received was “How do I find a place to rent in Gallery Place and the greater Penn Quarter?”
This was our answer, do you think we’re missing anything?
Here is a quick rundown of renting in Gallery Place/Penn Quarter (Penn Quarter encompasses Gallery Place):
There are apartment buildings and there are condominium building units rented out by the individual owners. You can refer to the map posted here for an overview of all of the residential buildings.
Apartment Buildings:
The rest are condo units rented out by the individual owners and you can find rental listings on Craigslist here:
There are a small number of units that are listed by Realtors on the MLS. I’m sure any realtor could help you out with that search. Zip codes for the area are 20004 and 20001.

Anyone know when the Newseum apartments will be delivered? I keep meaning to walk by the site and look.
My $0.02 on renting, which actually applies to all neighborhoods: rent in a condo if possible. Big buildings run by management companies tend to be much more difficult to deal with because they work for the management company and seem to value low cost over customer service. Additionally, based on three apartment hunts (Gallery Place/Downtown, West End, and Dupont), rents tend to be a fair amount more expensive in apartment buildings. Condo buildings, on the other hand, offer the benefit of big buildings (security, on-site perks, maintenance), but the condo management works for the residents. Plus, single-unit landlords tend to be easier to deal with, probably because they’re allowed to act like humans, and because they care more about the property they own (and hence want to maintain a good relationship with their tenant).
Following on to PQResident’s comment, comparing rents vs. mortgage payments for the kind of apartment I wanted, in the location I wanted, made me decide to buy rather than rent. To rent an apartment like the one I bought would have been almost as much – possibly even more – than my mortgage payment. So for me the choice was fairly easy.
Hi All, we’re not going to publish comments about individual apartment complexes/condominiums. You can go to Apartment Ratings for that info. Thanks
gpliving,
Why no comments about individual apartments/condos? So what about the Apartment Ratings site. Many people don’t know about it, and it doesn’t cover condos. Plus, there aren’t that many comments– some not at all.
I’d be really interested in what folks have to say about their buildings. That’s kinda the point of a blog. Is there something you’re afraid of?
cityliving: Yes, I’m afraid of the 200+ comments on my strictly informational blog post. Let’s leave the ratings, reviews, and advertisements up to an external site. If you know of any other sites like aptratings (or start one up yourself) we will be happy to link to it!
I work for the Newseum, and we’re just starting to take reservations on the apartments! It’s going to be an incredible location. Our management company is Bozzuto (www.bozzuto.com). Watch for our new web site: http://www.newseumresidences.com.
