St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser At Fado Irish Pub (808 7th St NW) This Saturday
Fado Irish Pub (808 7th St NW; (202) 789-0066) wrote in to let us know about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser they are hosting this Saturday, March 10. Some events employ running or walking to raise money. For this event, you shave your head – the clipping begins at 3 pm.
What is St. Baldrick’s? The concept was born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1999 as the result of three friends who wanted to find a way to give back to society. A number of years later, events have taken place in 18 countries, 48 states and over $50 million has been raised thanks to more than 72,000 men and women willing to shave their heads. The mission of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is to raise awareness and funds to cure kid’s cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships. More information can be found on the St. Baldrick’s website.
Auction items and prizes include a 4 Disney Park Hopper passes accompanied by $800 in airfare vouchers from Southwest (silent auction), an autographed DC United Soccer Ball and tickets to a match, and gift certificates for area restaurants such as Jaleo, Carmine’s and Matchbox, as well as rafting and tubing day trips available as prizes.

Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Penn Quarter to Mount Pleasant – Like the Arlington Rap (from Go Remy), another local puts together a song with a DMV theme. We are on the 42 bus frequently which now gets its own song from singer/songwriter René Moffatt. [WaPo] & [Video on Vimeo (with lyrics)] & [Arlington Rap (Go Remy)]
Chinatown – The GAO opines on what to do with the FBI building as a part of the federal government’s building stock. Might it be more cost effective to sell the property off to a private developer and build a new headquarters elsewhere? It just might. [DC MUD (Metro Urban Diary)]
Downtown – We’ve eaten at Fuel Pizza on K Street a few times now and await the opening of their Penn Quarter location at 6th and F St NW. Here’s a review of the concept. [Capital Cooking]
Chinatown – Daikaya on 6th St NW next to Graffiato’s updates their opening date to late spring/early summer 2012. [Washington CityPaper]
Trump Weighs In On Old Post Office [Re]Development
The news broke last month that the Trump Organization won the bid to redevelop the Italiante style Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue. A few neighbors we know rolled their eyes when they heard this news but we also know that Trump has delivered on at least some percentage of his properties. Trump’s effusive marketing style is unmistakable as you’ll see a number of superlatives in this op-ed piece that appeared on the Washington Post site yesterday, and he allays concerns that the visiting public won’t have access to the clock tower known for it’s fantastic view of DC. They will. The bells will continue to ring too. More importantly he spells out his high level vision for the property and the unarguable economic benefits it will bring. We like it when jobs come to DC and stay here. What is our particular earmark? We hope there will be a nice outdoor sidewalk dining option as mentioned in the piece as that will bring energy and vitality to the streetscape where it is sorely lacking at night. The project is supposed to be finished in 2016.
