Jaleo Under Renovation Until March 26, Don’t Panic!
As we mentioned in last week’s heard in the ‘hood, chef José Andrés’ Jaleo restaurant (7th & E St NW) is undergoing a month-long renovation and will reopen on March 26. Andrés invites us to follow the progress on their facebook page. Day 1 looks like it consisted of furniture removal.
Leica Camera Store Making Headway (900 Block F Street)
The Leica camera store in the 900 block of F Street NW is showing construction activity according to PQ Living reader Jon Gann of Mather Studios and DC Shorts (photo credit for above photo). We sauntered over to the Carroll Square location next to Le Pain Quotidien to check it out and the windows are indeed papered over with Leica branded stock. The buildout appears to be a few weeks in and with just under 2,000 square feet to fill, we expect it to take one to two months to complete.
According to the press release:
The Leica Camera space…will include a product showroom, image gallery, and a studio where customers will have the opportunity to try out the company’s finest cameras. The 1,837 square foot boutique will be Leica’s first stand-alone store in the country, although the product line has been preferred by White House photographers and other prominent photojournalists for decades. Carroll Square’s proximity to the National Press Club at Fourteenth and F Streets was part of the building’s appeal as a retail location.
Growing up as amateur photographers, Leica was the aspirational camera we always wanted, the Porsche of cameras with a dedicated following. It will be fun to have a space where we can check out the latest gear and talk to company representatives. It’s hard to believe it’s been five plus years but we recall when Carroll Square was just being built and it’s now nice to see all the F Street bays fill up.

Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
National Mall (video above) – The groundbreaking for the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) breaks ground at 15th St and Constitution Ave NW. David Gregory talks with Rep. John Lewis and Lonnie Bunch, the museum’s Director, about how the museum will tell the African American story. It will take approximately 3 years to get the edifice erected but in the meantime the NMAAHC is hosting a gallery you can visit in the National Museum of American History. Downtown – Want to see some cool photos of the CityCenter site (aka Old Convention Center) from on high? This story about crane operators does the trick! [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – The Clara Barton condo on E Street NW gets an honorable mention for its perks and amenities. [ExpressNightOut]
Mount Vernon Triangle – It won’t be Caldo but it will be the Carving Room restaurant going into the retail bay at 300 Massachusetts Ave NW, the Mass Court apartment building. Filling that space has been much awaited. [Prince of Petworth]
Chinatown – One of our favorite Capitals players from back in the day, Rod Langway (#5 – D), has been named an Ambassador for the Capitals. He’ll be doing promotions work for the Capitals in a variety of settings. Perhaps he can sprinkle some “get past the second round of the playoffs” dust on the Caps this year. That’s what they really need! [dump ‘n chase]
All Over DC – This story might best be found in The Onion except that it is true. A guy in DC has a vanity license plate that reads ‘No-Tags’. Guess what happens? He gets thousands of dollars in DMV tickets saying he has no tags. Crazy. [NBC Washington]
Penn Quarter – (Ed. Note: This is not safe for work.) The Riot Act does a take off on Living Social’s SocialStudes “stuff” people say in DC video. It’s called stuff people FROM DC say and much of it was shot in the Penn Quarter…links to both videos follow. Anyone who is from DC and who also lives in DC should understand them both. Downtown – P.O.V. at the Hotel W and The Park at Fourteenth make Nightclub & Bar’s Top 100 nightclubs in the US coming in at position #44 and #88 respectively. Nine of the top ten are in Las Vegas…go figure. [Nightclub & Bar Magazine] & [N&B Top 100 list[PDF]]
Penn Quarter – The 2011 TEDx Penn Quarter videos from last fall are up on YouTube and here’s the playlist for all of them in a row. [TEDx Penn Quarter YouTube video series]
