Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Downtown – The Trump Hotel Collection puts in a bid for the Old Post Office Building redevelopment on Pennsylvania Ave NW. [WaPo]
Union Station – Curbside buses continue gaining in popularity and will be centralized at Union Station. We’ve ridden them and generally prefer pocketing the savings over the train. One benefit of taking the train…the quiet car…shuuuuush. [WaPo] & [TBD]
Downtown – The Corcoran Gallery celebrates the Washington Color School. [Corcoran Museum]
Penn Quarter – Le Pain Quotidien is under construction at the corner of 10th and F St NW. [The Internationalist]
Downtown – The tobacconist W. Curtis Draper (aka Drapers) will be moving from 640 14th St NW to 699 15th St NW (corner of 15th and G St NW). Opening date is August 30. Not many places to enjoy a good stogie in this town, but this is one of them. [PQL Intelligence Network] Hat tip: Columbo
Penn Quarter – Wagamama is still on for 7th St NW in the old Olsson’s space and plans to launch in early 2012. [The Internationalist]

Penn Quarter Offices Attracting Protests
Photo credit: zombieite, a protest in NYC
In the past, protests in the District against corporate or government offices were mostly limited to areas west (K Street) or south (National Mall) of Penn Quarter. But now that Penn Quarter is finding itself home to an increasing number of lobbying offices, it seems as though Penn Quarter residents should be prepared for an increased number of protests in the neighborhood against those offices.
For example, today (July 5, 2011) from 4-6pm (pdf), attendees of the Jobs with Justice National Conference have a protest scheduled to occur outside Walmart’s lobbying office at 701 8th St NW. We’re hoping that the protest contains itself to the relatively benign 8th St.
As a bonus for the conference goers, the 6-9pm block of time following the protest is designated for “Dining on your own” and what better location to find yourself hungry than 7th Street in Gallery Place?
Celebrate Seasonal Food
As the best of Summer’s produce fills the farmer’s market stands, here are three opportunities to enjoy special meals featuring seasonal and local produce.
Don’t miss this year’s Squash Blossom Festival at one of my neighborhood favorites, Oyamel. If you’ve never tasted the wonderfully delicate and delicious squash blossoms, especially when stuffed with goat cheese and deep fried, then you are in for a treat. Special cocktails and menu items incorporating squash blossoms will be available through August 14.
On August 8, Pink Line Project will host a summer dinner party at the Textile Museum with local chef Barton Seaver, a National Geographic Fellow and author of “For Cod and Country,” preparing a special menu incorporating summertime, seafood, sustainability and surprise. For more information and tickets, click here.
Tickets are now available for the second date of Outstanding in the Field to be held in our area. If you’re not familiar with this one-of-a-kind dining experience, check it out. The chefs from Birch & Barley will be preparing a custom dinner incorporating produce straight from the farm where you’ll be dining, along with a special beer pairing.
