New Sign: Cuba Libre DC Neon Edition
The Cuba Libre restaurant sign is up, the interior is finished, and we understand the establishment opens to the public tomorrow, Friday, October 1. We thought we’d give you an evening sign preview and since there are no residential buildings nearby, the neon glow won’t disturb anyone’s sleep. It does have a nice color scheme to it.

Two New Restaurants Coming Soon: District of Pi and Graffiato!
In the last two days, we were tipped off to two new Penn Quarter restaurant openings. The first restaurant is District of Pi (as reported by stlmag), which will occupy one of the last remaining retail spaces on F St at approximately 914 F St NW, next to the Ventana condominium. The second restaurant announcement is for Graffiato (as reported by Going Out Gurus), which will occupy the vacant building that sits between the Cosmopolitan Condominium and the Myrene Condominium buildings at 707 6th St NW.
District of Pi is a pizzeria based out of St. Louis, MO and will host about 150 seats plus another 800 sq ft of space in the mezzanine of the building. The pizzeria also features custom-brewed beer, Pi Common, crafted by Schlafly, a Saint Louis Brewery.
Graffiato will serve simple Italian dishes like stuffed ravioli, wood-fired pizza and gnocchi with gravy. Of course, the owner and top-chef celebrity, Mike Isabella, will strive to make these simple dishes more extraordinary than your mom used to make. He has tapped talent from Zaytinya and his 145-seat restaurant will feature two levels, bar and pizza counter on the bottom floor and charcuterie and cheese bar on the upper level.
Thanks to PQL commenter pqtova for the tip on Pi restaurant!

Penn Quarter – We’ve tried Carmine’s at 425 7th St NW and the portions are humongo. Here’s a review you may want to check out. [Girl Meets Food]
Penn Quarter – Our eyes and ears on the street tell us that the former Manhattan Deli (aka roller skating rink pizza) D’Acqua restaurant space in Market Square is to become a Paul Bakery – as in the French domiciled bakery chain with the tagline “Maison de qualité.” C’est vrai! Penn Quarter – CoCo Sala is opening a retail outlet on F Street NW next to its restaurant. [Washington Business Journal]
Penn Quarter – We poked our heads in the windows of the newly finished Cuba Libre restaurant at 9th and H Streets NW and checked out the snazzy new neon sign too. It looks pretty fantastic and we will be checking it out! [NBC Washington] & [The Triangle]
Shaw/Mount Vernon Square – The Convention Center Community Association (CCCA) has its monthly meeting at the new Shaw library. [Life In Mount Vernon Square]
All Over DC – We will have a new mayor in November. Here’s one blog’s take on the election. [Borderstan]
Neighborhood Pic: Another Day At Work In The PQ
We caught these window washers early one morning getting the job done on a Penn Quarter office building. Note the cell phone repeaters on the top of the building, not an uncommon sight these days.
