A Peek Inside The Former Webster School
Just as a quick follow-up to our post from last week, we were walking by the old Webster School (10th & H St NW) and found the doors propped open behind the fencing. Here are a couple of pics we took. Aside from the bubbling paint, the structure actually looks to be in decent shape.
Man Vs. Map…A New Form Of Advertising
The pedestrian and auto traffic in downtown DC, especially on 7th Street NW, is irresistible to marketers. It’s advertising crack candy. There are condos, businesses, office buildings, metro stops, bus stops, museums, restaurants, and hotels all lining our area’s Main Street and there is no end of workers, residents, students and tourists plying the sidewalks. It doesn’t surprise us that marketing departments vie to get pedestrians’ attention in any way possible including plopping a sofa down in the middle of the sidewalk, smacking street ads down on the pavement, and lighting up the corner of 7th and H St NW with digital billboards.
We have a new one for you that we saw yesterday. We observed a truck parked on 7th Street NW with a large interactive display of the United States and a Simon Says-like game that users play in the bottom right corner to rack up points (anyone remember that Milton Bradley hit electronic game from the 1980s?). The goal for the person playing the game is to repeat the patterns of displayed color lights shown to them, get a high score, and be eligible for a gift certificate. The goal for the company advertising is to get noticed.
Effective? Perhaps. Innocuous? Probably. Eye catching? Certainly.

PQ Goes Down In Movie History
Many may remember the Georgetown Metro stop that was featured in the 1987 film No Way Out. Kevin Costner’s character eluded some nasty folks by hiding out in the Georgetown metro stop – that doesn’t actually exist.
Well, it seems that Penn Quarter is about to go down in similar truth-bending movie history. According to Nikki Schwab at the Washington Examiner, the movie Salt (in theaters starting Friday, July 23) will feature a Penn Quarter shopping mall. We know what you are thinking, but, no, this isn’t a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Gallery Place complex.
In the scene, Angelina Jolie, runs into the Archives metro station to elude some pursuers. Apparently, another character explains that Jolie “ran into the Penn Quarter shopping mall.” The actual mall that is displayed is the underground L’Enfant Plaza shopping area. Jolie then surfaces at the L’Enfant metro station without ever boarding a train.
