The Importance Of Being Signage

Posted by pqresident
at December 7, 2009

800 K SignSigns can be a vital advertising pathway from businesses to the outside, pedestrian world and that’s what we think about this sign placed on the 7th Street sidewalk between Eye Street and K Street outside the Techworld building. You wouldn’t know any of these businesses existed without a sign such as the one to the right that alerts passers by to the underground food court at 800 K Street NW (view from Eye Street into pedestrian walkway). The only reason we know about the food court is because that’s where the post office we patronize can be found.

DC Link Roundup: Heard In The ‘Hood

Posted by pqresident
at December 6, 2009

Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC.

Follow PQ Living via Facebook here and Twitter here.

Penn Quarter/Downtown – One cherished institution in downtown made Google’s “Top 10 Searches in DC.” OK…technically it’s not an institution but it might as well be because sure as shootin’, you’ll see a good movie if you go there. Can you tell which one we mean? [DCist]

Penn Quarter – Local PQ artist Dana Ellyn interview and preview of “Divinely Irreverent.” [ReadySetDC]

Mount Vernon Triangle – Henry’s Soul Cafe, home of the sweet potato pie, opened at 4th and K Streets NW. Ten years from now, will it become our neighborhood’s Ben’s Chili Bowl? [The (Mount Vernon) Triangle]

Downtown – Video tour of the Franklin School at 13th and K Streets NW. [The Other 35 Percent]

Penn Quarter – There was a carjacking on 7th Street NW and the victim was the daughter of Senator Bob Corker. The perps were found and arrested. [WaPo] & [MSNBC]

14th Street – Cork Market opens at 14th and S Streets, NW (1805 14th St NW). [U Street Girl] and [ReadySetDC 1] & [ReadySetDC 2]

Penn Quarter/Chinatown – Ping Pong Dim Sum is opening in Washington DC at 7th and I (Eye) Streets NW! We understand it will open Friday, December 11 although the sign on the door says Saturday, December 12. If we learn something more certain, we’ll pass it along. [Urban Daddy]

UPDATE (12/8) – Ping Pong Dim Sum will open in DC on Saturday, December 12.

Union Hardware Building Demolition Started (709-711 D St NW)

709-711-d-st-nw-plans

Thanks to Jason for the initial tip and to the several readers who alerted us to demolition activity on D St NW between 7th & 8th.  It appears that demolition work has ramped up of the old Union Hardware building (and the building next door).  We wrote a post 2 1/2 years ago (wow, time flies!) regarding plans for these two buildings.

According to our past information, the Union Hardware building (711 D St NW) will be completely demolished and redeveloped into a much taller building, while the neighboring building (709 D St NW) will be rehabbed.  The DCRA permit that was approved for this demolition work on 11/3/2009 states DEMO FACADE.  However, the HPRB action approval on 10/22/2009 states “711 D Street, NW, HPA #10-005, concept/new façade on non-contributing building.”  So, we’re guessing that the original plan to demolish the entire 711 D St NW building and develop a new 5-story building still holds.

The planned use for these buildings (retail, office or residential) is still undetermined.

Trying To Do Our Civic Duty

Posted by Columbo
at December 2, 2009

Yesterday we had jury duty, or at least we responded to a jury summons.  This was the third time DC Superior has sent us a jury summons since we moved to DC.  Each time the same thing:  we show up at 8 am, check in, read the paper, watch part of a movie, listen as names are called for a jury pool, re-read the paper, check email, head to lunch, come back from lunch, listen as more names are called for a  jury pool, get dismissed and head home.

This time was the closest we’d ever come to being selected just for the jury pool.  Our name was actually called, but after the clerk finished reading off the 50 or so names selected, two names were excused from that list and we were one of them.  Now we know many of you are thinking we’re lucky not to have been called, but never having served on a jury we don’t know what to feel.  What happens after your selected for the jury pool?  What is the voir dire process like?  12 Angry Men is about the only jury experience we have, so we were kind of hoping this would be the time we’d go further in the process.

Have any of you been called upon by the DC to be on a jury?  Is it as bad as everyone seems to think it is?
