Union Hardware Building Demolition Started (709-711 D St NW)
Thanks to Jason for the initial tip and to the several readers who alerted us to demolition activity on D St NW between 7th & 8th. It appears that demolition work has ramped up of the old Union Hardware building (and the building next door). We wrote a post 2 1/2 years ago (wow, time flies!) regarding plans for these two buildings.
According to our past information, the Union Hardware building (711 D St NW) will be completely demolished and redeveloped into a much taller building, while the neighboring building (709 D St NW) will be rehabbed. The DCRA permit that was approved for this demolition work on 11/3/2009 states DEMO FACADE. However, the HPRB action approval on 10/22/2009 states “711 D Street, NW, HPA #10-005, concept/new façade on non-contributing building.” So, we’re guessing that the original plan to demolish the entire 711 D St NW building and develop a new 5-story building still holds.
The planned use for these buildings (retail, office or residential) is still undetermined.

Of the two buildings, they’re definitely making the right call as to which one deserves to be replaced and which one deserves to be saved. Anyway, nice to have gainfully employed construction workers in the neighborhood!
