Cuba Libre Restaurant…Spring 2010
UPDATE (June 2010): Cuba Libre Restaurant’s opening is now looking like September 2010.
UPDATE (May 2010): Looks like it will be June or July 2010 for Cuba Libre’s opening. Check out this story for an update.
An anonymous reader PQ Living reader Doug tipped us off that Cuba Libre Restaurant (and Rum Bar) now has an opening day timeframe for their DC location at 801 9th Street, NW stamped on the front of their website confirming our earlier report from June of this year. The opening timeframe? A very broad swath called Spring 2010.
Best Savory Deal In Town*
About a month ago we told you what we thought was the best deal in town. While not everyone agreed with us it did make for a lively discussion. Today we’re breaking down the categories a bit more and offering up our opinion on the best savory deal in town: Proof’s full charcuterie ($28) with three cheeses ($13). For $41 you get mounds of meat, a reasonable amount of cheese, all the toasted bread you can eat, sugar dates, and various condiments ranging from sweet to tangy.
We’re not in the tank for Proof, in fact we’re not that fond of anything else on their menu (save the wine). We’ve had a full dinner there several times and have usually come away disappointed. But when we go and sit at the bar with the charcuterie & cheese combo we’re reminded of why we love this restaurant. Anytime we can get away with paying $41 for two people for dinner (and really there is enough meat for three on the board) in PQ we feel like we’re doing ok. Of course the wine sets us back quite a bit, but you can’t wash Serrano ham down with a glass of water.
* We realize that our best savory deal is not vegetarian friendly. We’ll do a “best vegetarian deal in town” one of these days.

Bruegger’s Debuts Outside Seating
Back in May we informed you that Bruegger’s (505 9th ST NW) had a notice up to add outdoor seating. Walking along E street yesterday we were happy to see the tables and chairs set up and in use on such a sunny, pretty day. That stretch of sidewalk is so wide it should make for a great place to hang out with a bagel, cup of coffee, and your favorite web enabled device as Bruegger’s offers free wifi.
