The Most Important Ford’s Upgrade
You may not know it, but Friday was an important day for Ford’s Theatre patrons. The deliveries being made in the photo to the left should be a welcome relief to the derriere of anyone who ever sat in the theatre before renovations began.
The boxes (which are labeled Irwin Seating Company) we’re assuming (hoping, praying) contain seats which are significantly more comfortable than the old wooden Ford’s seats. Of the upgrades being made to Ford’s, this surely will be the most satisfying of them all.
DC To Test Mass Notification System On Sunday Morning
If you’re within earshot of the National Mall, which most of us are, you will likely hear a test of DC’s mass notification system on Sunday morning. It will happen between 9am and 10am on Sunday January 11, 2009. Here is the raw text of the Alert DC message:
The city will test its new mass notification system between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m on Sunday, January 11, 2009. The test will include four generic test voice messages and one tonal test. Anyone in the vicinity of the National Mall may hear the test. Please be advised, this is only a test.
Accidental Advocate Screens Jan 12 At E Street Cinema
The Accidental Advocate billed as “a story of love, hope and the politics of stem cell research” will be screened in cities across the US on one day only in each city. DC goes first on Monday, January 12 at 7 pm at the E Street Cinema (555 11th Street NW). Here’s the synopsis:
When Claude Gerstle, a surgeon and athlete, suffers a tragic bicycle accident that leaves him paralyzed from the neck down, he and his daughter, Jessica, find hope in stem cell research. The Accidental Advocate is a wheelchair odyssey of a father and daughter who track down the thinkers, the politicians, the crusaders and the naysayers in an effort to understand the promise of the science and why a political quagmire is stalling a cure.

2009 Zenith Foundation Calendar Benefits Capital Area Food Bank
The new year is upon us and that means it’s time to scramble around and find those replacement 2009 calendars for the kitchen, the office and all those other places you want to keep an eye on the months as they go by. The Zenith Community Arts Foundation’s 2009 Calendar entitled “Food Glorious Food IV” that benefits the Capital Area Food Bank is a good way to replace those calendars, support a good cause and keep your donation dollars in DC.
The calendar itself is a delightful mix of art, food and practicality with each month presenting a piece of art, a recipe from a local chef and the layout of the month’s days. Local chefs contribute recipes with one recipe provided each month. Contributing chefs include Peter Smith from PS 7, Vikram Sunderam of Rasika and Caesere Assad of Vegetate.
How can you get a calendar? We suggest the following:
1) Call or visit the Zenith Gallery (413 7th Street, NW) at 202-783-2963
2) Visit the Capital Area Food Bank’s website and order online.
The minimum donation per calendar is $15.
