Two Closures: Zenith Gallery & Bead Museum
We learned about two closures in our neighborhood…
Zenith Gallery
The Zenith Gallery (413 7th Street NW) will be closing its current location at the end of February 2009 after a 22 year run. What is clear from the press release is that Margery Goldberg, the founder and proprietor of Zenith, will stay engaged in the arts business via managing, curating, consulting, commissioning and acquiring activities. The Zenith Community Arts Foundation will also maintain its ongoing activities. They have announced their intent to open a space in The Arts at 5th and I, the Donohoe project in the Mount Vernon Triangle that will include a hotel, residences and a jazz club. A number of closing events are planned which we’ll post as the date approaches.
Bead Museum
A PQ Living reader pointed us to the stories that narrate The Bead Museum’s (400 7th Street NW) closing after an 11 year run as they were not able to support continuing operations with current income. They might have gotten some good synergy with the once proposed Textile Museum Annex which would have been across the street from where the Inauguration Superstore is now set up (see our post from earlier today). It looks as though history has something else in mind. The Bead Museum’s last day will be December 31st.

Inauguration ’09: Get Ready…
Inauguration ‘Superstore’ opens at 421 7th Street, NW
Need a stylish Obama tee shirt for the inauguration? Still wistful for a McCain/Palin deck of playing cards? Superstore may be a strong word as we usually give South of the Border or Walmart that distinction but the seasonal retail shop that opened at 421 7th Street NW (shown above) does have an array of inauguration oriented merchandise spread out among tables on the front half of the first floor. Another photo is available after the break.
More information about Inauguration Day appearing
We’re seeing more public dissemination of information about January 20 and the days leading up to it. Below we’ve listed a few links for reference. Courtesy of a Sunday afternoon run, we can also confirm that two portable (portable is a relative term here) cell phone towers are now in place at the east end of the Mall between Constitution Avenue and the Capitol Reflecting Pool (check out the second to last link to get more detail).

Work To Begin Soon On Former Waffle Shop?
Last week we noticed that someone had begun to remove debris from the interior of the former Waffle Shop (522 10th ST NW). A few days later the windows were covered with Davis Construction paper and the door was boarded up with plywood. Davis Construction paper also covers the windows of the new entrance to Ford’s Theatre across the street.
We’re wondering if this is an indication that the Waffle Shop facade will soon be coming down, and if the west side of 10th Street is soon to receive the makeover the east side is experiencing.
Photo of the Week: Jingle Bell Run
Although it was a few weeks ago, a PQ Living reader sent in these rather artistic images of an evening holiday run downtown on F Street NW. Check after the break to see the full set.
