Happy Labor Day!
Even writers need a break so we’re taking our own Labor Day holiday here at PQ Living to rest and make plans for our September calendar and beyond. Lots of good stuff going on in September including…
Arts & Film: Theater season resumes at the Woolly Mammoth or the Shakespeare Theatre. If you like getting outside, the Arts on Foot is coming up on September 13 and if you’re more of an indoor kind of person, then the DC Shorts Film Festival runs September 11 to September 18. The F Street artists are back too.
Retail: The long awaited Safeway at CityVista will open on September 12. Yes!
Housing: Construction progress continues at the Dumont and CityVista as those condo buildings are putting on their finishes getting ready for residents to go to settlement. The concrete skeleton of Ashton’s Judiciary Square apartment building is up to about five or six levels on its way to twelve (fourteen if you include two underground parking levels).
Commercial: The DC Government may award the development rights to the 5th and Eye parcel. 700 6th Street NW, an office building next to the Verizon Center, is topped off (or close to it).
Wayback VI: Downtown DC 1912 Style
Today’s Wayback Machine brings you an aerial shot of downtown Washington taken from the Washington Monument by the Haines Photo Company in the winter of 1912. This photo is just one portion of a panoramic shot taken looking directly east from the Washington Monument. It isn’t as high resolution as the photos at Shorpy, the 100 year old photo blog, but it’s fun to get that high up view and see how the times have changed.
What’s present? Center Market (now long gone), The Old Post Office, Union Station, Pension Building (National Building Museum), National Museum of Natural History (brand new at the time – it had only been open for two years) and lots of trees on the National Mall.
What’s missing? All of the Federal Triangle, National Archives and of course, the MCI Center.
If you want to see the complete panorama including the Capitol and the Potomac River/Washington Channel, click here. If you want to see the full panorama, go here and type in ‘b.e. view washington monument’ in the search box followed by pressing the ‘Go’ button.

Downtown Apple Store Rumors Persist
Neither Crazy Eddie (“His prices are insaaaaane!”) nor Luskin’s (“The cheapest guy in town!”) are still in business but if we were kicking it old school and those now defunct electronics retailers were going concerns, there’s no doubt they’d be hawking Apple iPhones and they’d be looking at doing it in downtown DC. (We’ve reported on this before…) Speaking of which, the rumors keep popping up that Apple is looking for space in our ‘hood where they can drop a store. The latest evidence? An Apple retail store devotee website. And you thought the Miley Cyrus fan sites were over the top…here’s the quote:
Penn Quarter – Washingon (DC) – In early August tipsters said that Apple’s real estate team was seriously scouting locations, including the area around 7th Street and H Street, and the new nearby just-announced, 10-acre City Center DC development (former Convention Center, H-New York St, 9th-11th St.). The district is north of the Capitol mall, equidistant between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, adjacent to Chinatown. The development–and store–could open in 2011.
PQ Living props go out to Paolo for this one!
PS. If you’re waxing nostalgic for a few Crazy Eddie commercials, check here and here and especially here. If you’re a DC local, the Luskin’s commercials are here and here.
