DC Public Library Brings Digital Goods Downtown
The DC Public Library is bringing its digital bookmobile, an “immersive download experience inside a high-tech tractor-trailer,” to the Old Convention Center site located at 10th and H streets NW on September 3rd and 4th between 9 am and 6 pm each day. Readers of all ages are invited to engage in digital downloading through interactive demonstrations and by experiencing the Library’s audiobook, eBook, music, and video download service at this free event.
What is the Digital Bookmobile?
This community outreach vehicle is a high-tech version of the traditional bookmobile. It’s an 18 wheel tractor trailer equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the D.C. Public Library download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and download and enjoy eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video from the library.
For more information about the DCPL’s digital downloads, check out PQ Living writer Columbo’s reviews here and here or have a look at the DCPL download website at: http://overdrive.dclibrary.org

Vapiano construction gets additional approvals. Lots of readers have asked what’s going on with Vapiano. We’ve personally observed lots of construction over the past few months, but this proves that construction is on-going.

DC Food Finder
The August 20th edition of Street Sense (purchased from our regular vendor, Orin, at 11th & G) has an interesting article on a recently released website called DC Food Finder. This free service lets you enter a DC address, ward, or other location information and search for “healthy affordable food.”
To test this database we first selected Farmers Markets, Community Gardens and Urban Food Projects, and Nutrition and Cooking Classes, and then entered the Verizon Center for our location. The results pull up an interactive map marking the points that match your criteria, with a full text results list to the side.
It’s an interesting tool designed to help those in need find lower cost healthy food. One of our results was the PQ Farmers Market, which while healthy is certainly not what we’d consider cheap. But the majority of our results seemed to fit in quite well with the service’s mission. We were surprised to see how many results our test search pulls up within 2 miles of the Verizon Center.
Smithsonian Installs New Outdoor Sculpture At 9th & F St Today! *pics*
This morning, officials at the Smithsonian American Art Museum will be receiving and installing the Roy Lichtenstein Sculpture which used to sit 1 block away from the World Trade Center in Battery Park City (NYC).
The sculpture, named Modern Head, will be installed (pdf) on the grounds of the museum’s main building at the corner of 9th and F St NW. It is on loan from the James Goodman Gallery and Jeffrey H. Loria & Co. Inc. in New York City.
We’ll update with pics throughout the day!
Update: Smithsonian officials said that, while this piece is technically on loan, there is no end date for the loan.
