Zola Wine Update
A brief update on Zola Wine, which we first wrote about in March of this year. We are hoping to have more information in the coming weeks. The public hearing dates have passed and the notices have come down. The building permit however offers some interesting clues.
We’ve seen the inside of this location a few times, lots of interior construction going on right now. One of the workers we talked to could confirm (granted this seems pretty obvious) that it will be a wine store, but no idea on when it would open.
This permit shows the owners as KEG Associates LLC. We checked with the DCRA and there is a KEG Associates 1 LLC registered to do business in DC (it is incorporated in DE) but we can’t find anything so far about its holdings. Do they also own restaurant Zola?
One of the more interesting updates on this permit is the metion of a 38 seat restaurant. Again we wonder about any connection to restaurant Zola.
Could this be a wine shop like Best Cellers or DeVinos? Or will this actually be a wine shop & restaurant combo? We’ll post more information as our investigation continues.
Corner of 9th & H St To Become A… Citibank
Thanks to DCDAVE for tipping us off to some retail construction activity on the SW corner of 9th & H St NW. DCDAVE asked one of the construction workers what was going into the space and he was told that it will be a Citibank.
We’ve experienced that banks are a sort of lazy man’s retail tenant. It seems that banks are the first people in line to gobble up retail space in prime locations so that they can install their ATM machines. We’ve also observed that developers have to actively work to attract quality retail tenants and that may mean that the space sits empty for many months.
Maybe when the old convention center site is redeveloped, surrounding building owners will be inspired to seek other types of retail tenants and resist leasing space to banks.
WaPo: Ford’s Theatre Renovation Update
Last Friday, WaPo filed an update on the Ford’s Theatre renovations leading up to a February 2009 opening. The story is long on history but a bit short on the actual details of the renovations. We’ve reported on Ford’s Theatre before and look forward to having it reopen. Here’s to hoping that needed legroom improvements are part of the renovation!
