Amplified Noise Legislation For Downtown Residents
On Tuesday, June 3rd, the DC Council will vote on the Noise Control Protection Amendment Act of 2008 (Bill 17-177). This is the Act that would put a limit on amplified non-commercial speech (there is no limit right now). It’s important to note that unamplified speech is not affected by this legislation.
Residents need to make themselves heard this time because labor unions are putting a lot of pressure on the DC Council.

All Roads Lead To Washington
Or so we’re beginning to think. There is yet another bus company throwing their hat into the ring, megabus service started on Friday in DC, and it picks up at the same corner (11th & G NW) as the BoltBus we’ve written about before.
The side of the bus advertises many cities, but if you’re departing from DC, New York is the only destination they offer. If you’re departing from NY, you have a wider range of destinations including but not limited to Boston & Toronto.
Just like BoltBus, prices are low (as cheap as $1.50) and the DC to NY bus caters to us short attention spanners with wifi as well. On the megabus website the only bus amenity listed is bathrooms (we don’t debate the importance of that feature), so we don’t know if wifi is available on all the routes.
We’re all for more competition and better transit options, but is 11th & G becoming the new DC bus terminal?
Jaleo’s Liquor License Suspended – ABRA Tells Us Why
There was a short discussion a couple of days ago regarding a yellow liquor license suspension notice posted on Jaleo‘s window (480 7th St NW). So, we asked DC’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) why the license was suspended and received this response:
Jaleo is serving a suspension from May 26-29, 2008 for a sale to a minor. A show cause hearing was held on April 23, 2008, and the Board decided upon a $2,000 fine payable within 30 days and 14 day suspension with 10 days stayed for one year and 4 days served.
It should be noted that DC’s ABRA regularly tests establishments regarding their carding procedures and serving of underage patrons. Evidently, they were caught during one of these tests.
Thanks goes out to Ms. Simms at ABRA for a quick reply to our inquiry!
What Is This Valet Reading?
You might think this valet seated on the low rise ledge outside Asia Nine is reading a notice of some kind or maybe he’s looking at a list of already stowed cars. I wondered myself…peering through the window more closely from my sushi bar perch, I saw four columns of alphabetically arranged common English words on the page and I realized he’s learning the language. That got me to thinking about how our nation, an immigrant nation, gets a fresh infusion of eager minds and hearts daily who want an opportunity at the American dream.
When my great-grandparents came from Europe to settle in Chicago in the late 1800s, guys cut rows of carcasses in meat packing facilities to earn coin. We have rows of asphalt in downtown DC so in 2008 guys valet cars to earn coin. The good news is I don’t think we’re going to get an Upton Sinclair style book out of the situation. It also got me thinking about how a cross section of people representing all the slices of Washington’s communities live, work or pass through our downtown neighborhood every day. And that’s another reason why I like living here in the PQ compared to the rather homogenized neighborhood I previously called home…we’re keeping it real.
