Sometimes, the bloggers at GPLiving feel like ambassadors of the neighborhood. We receive a wide range of questions in our email box and we’re happy to answer them all! One recent question we received was “How do I find a place to rent in Gallery Place and the greater Penn Quarter?”
This was our answer, do you think we’re missing anything?
Here is a quick rundown of renting in Gallery Place/Penn Quarter (Penn Quarter encompasses Gallery Place):
There are apartment buildings and there are condominium building units rented out by the individual owners. You can refer to the map posted here for an overview of all of the residential buildings.

The rest are condo units rented out by the individual owners and you can find rental listings on Craigslist here:
There are a small number of units that are listed by Realtors on the MLS. I’m sure any realtor could help you out with that search. Zip codes for the area are 20004 and 20001.
Things to look out for when renting in downtown DC:
Chinatown Market Liquor License Suspended?
Dave just left a comment asking: anyone notice that Chinatown Market’s liquor license has been suspended?

The little bit of information that we have heard on this topic is that during the past several months, the owner of Chinatown Market agreed to voluntarily stop selling single-bottle beer only if every other liquor store in the neighborhood signed the same agreement. Some hard working neighbors were able to get every other liquor store to sign this agreement. When they revisited the Chinatown Market owner with this new info, the owner still refused to sign the agreement.
Please keep your comments nice and remember that Goods Carryout (602 H St NW, diagonally across the street from Chinatown Market) sells alcohol and has been a good neighbor.
Zaytinya Takes Reservations, MatchBox Now Open On Sundays
The restaurant machine in Penn Quarter is showing signs of increased strength with these announcements:
The folks over at Metrocurean have the scoop on neighborhood-favorite Zaytinya‘s new policy: they take reservations! Also, Zaytinya’s sibling, Oyamel is taking reservations. Note that the majority of seating is still for walk-ins. Of the seats that are reserved, some are put on opentable and the rest are for call-ins.
Also huge news, MatchBox is now open on Sundays. Our neighbors to the north at remaking le slum historique broke the news. We apologize for not citing the source of this news – we can’t remember where we read it or when it took effect.
Potato Valley Cafe Opening This Month (Or Next)! *Updated*
Thanks to Cheryl for pointing us to this Washingtonian article on Potato Valley Cafe.
The main takeaway from the article is this: A DC branch of the cafe is set to open this month or next on E Street near Penn Quarter. The address is approx. 616 E St NW.
