Adrian Fenty, who will certainly become our next mayor, visited Chinatown last week to meet with civic and business leaders in the area. He wants to make DC more of an international city, bring small businesses to Chinatown and preserve affordable housing. What does the visit signal about a future Fenty administration? We think that downtown living has improved dramatically over the last five years but those residents who live downtown will still need to persistently make their interests known to the new administration. GP Living hopes these visits continue long after November is but a glimmer in the rear view mirror.
Cluss Trivia Question Answered
Started in 1868 and completed in 1870, The Masonic Temple at the corner of 9th and F (901 F St, NW) that houses McCormick & Schmick’s and The Gallup Organization is a Cluss building. Here is a cool interactive map from 1892 where you can see the impact Cluss has had on our city.
Downtown Homeless Shelter To Stay Put
WaPo reports that DC is now attempting to keep The Franklin School (13th and K, NW) a homeless shelter and not lease it to Herbert Miller for redevelopment into a hotel. Its ad-hoc transformation into a shelter now appears to be heading for longer term reality. Developers Herbert Miller and Ted Lerner made news recently by offering the DC Government “competing visions” for the Anacostia waterfront redevelopment project.
Within walking distance but slightly afield from the Penn Quarter lies the Franklin School, finished in 1868 and designed by Adolph Cluss. Cluss’ architectural mark on Washington is unmistakable as the architect who designed the Eastern Market (7th and North Carolina, SE), the Sumner School (17th and M, NW) and the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building (The Mall).
Trivia Question: What still standing Cluss building in the Penn Quarter houses a restaurant and the world headquarters of a leading public opinion/research organization?
