What To Put On The DC Coin?

Posted by Columbo
December 20, 2007

The Post has a story this morning about how DC (and Puerto Rico, and Guam, and…) will get a “State” quarter in 2009.  No design has been finalized & according to the article Mayor Fenty says the design will include “maximum resident input.”

So what would our fellow PQ’ers put on the coin?   Electronic billboards?  The Waffle Shop?

Marion Barry of course (unfortunately, some people would probably not recognize the sarcasm…..)

I’d say “Taxation Without Representation.”

Or maybe some lovely crack rocks.

How about people standing on the right of an Metro escalator?

Comment by suicide_blond on December 20, 2007 @ 12:33 pm

i think a crack pipe would work better than rocks..in relief… .but i vote for “taxation without rep” too…

The Adams Memorial grave marker statue (“Grief”) in Rock Creek Cemetery

I just hope they don’t put a federal building or national monument, that’s not what living in DC is all about, IMO.

Some options:

1. “Northern hospitality and Southern efficiency”
2. Giant Rat
3. Man holding a bloodied knife.
4. Ethiopian Restaurant

1. Nationals stadium
2. The taxicab zoning system

bummer, i knew the straightlaced folks on this blog would delete my posting.

too bad. it’s reality in dc.

but on another note, it’s pretty certain that it’s going to be a monument of sorts on the coin. no, not “taxation without representation”, etc.

it’ll be a monument of sorts.

that’s what middle america, from coast to coast wants to see in dc.

oh, and i know a couple of people in the u.s. mint.

so…

which monument then?

Civil rights supporters watching MLK give his “I have a Dream” speech @ Lincoln Memorial

I believe living in DC is all about embracing the center of our democracy, freedom and the power of a federal system.

Comment by anon on December 21, 2007 @ 8:03 am

Well, I think it’s quite obvious…

“Bitch Set Me Up”

:-)

Comment by PQer on December 21, 2007 @ 10:46 am

I vote for #12, or #8-1. I guess #2 (tax w/o rep) woiuld be good but it would never be permitted.

Comment by Mr. T in DC on December 21, 2007 @ 3:35 pm

Another vote for the line “Taxation Without Representation” being included on the quarter.

#13 gets it, hands down!

Barry, more than anyone, defined and gave DC its image. Much as we’d like for people to think of us differently, he still comes up, all the time.

And for those of use who want to think that the Barry legacy is over, read today’s article in the Washington Post about the state of our schools. Pratt Kelly did nothing about it, Williams did nothing about it, but Fenty is trying to change it.

Nothing else counts more in what you do in a city than what you’re doing for the children.

Barry held the greatest potential to do something about this until he fell victim to power, drugs and women.

He is DC’s legacy. The bitch set him up and he in turn set up his city. Put it on the coin. We cannot forget.
