Two bits of news from the Historic Preservation Review Board’s meeting from July 27.
- 600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (and 609-631 I Street NW), HPA #06-289, concept/demolition, alteration, new Construction.
Concept approved with design refinements requested. Staff report approved. Vote 10-0.
- 1000 F Street, NW, HPA #06-339, concept/demolition, alteration, addition.
Concept plan approved. Applicant will submit for preliminary approval prior to submission of final plans.
Preliminary plans should also include developed plans for the restoration of the historic façade and salvage of significant features of the old Waffle Shop. Vote 11-0.

It may not fit the traditional definition of “beauty”, but Waffle Shop’s facade is definitely worth saving. The mosaic-tile design and the neon sign out front are distinctive features, in my opinion.
I love the way the waffle shop looks. I’m glad some of it will be preserved. Any info on what the proposed concept is for 1000 F street?
at a minimum, the Waffle Shop’s facade should be restored to its former glory. if the interior received the same attention then it would truly remain a step back in time. I’d even venture to say that a restored Waffle Shop would surpass the Tastee Diner in Bethesda as an authentic diner experience.
Glad to see HPRB is on the ball. Waffle Shop is one of the few authentic examples of 50′s diner facades exteriors (chrome, stainless, tile, linoleum) and deserves to be preserved. Same with the one near Del Ray. I only hope they don’t do some halfassed sandgun facade-ectomy like the rest of Jemal’s properties.
Let’s hear it for affordable dining!

Why the classic 1950′s facade! I’ve been there a few times and I always feel like I am going back in time. I would love to see Waffle Shop scrubbed clean and restored to it’s old lunch-counter glory. That would be a GREAT 24 hour diner.
