What’s A Dog To Do?
Tony writes to us to ask about getting Fido or Fifi out of the apartment in the Penn Quarter. As a former dog owner, this author knows how important it is for a dog to get out of the house for exercise and “other” reasons. Some buildings have courtyards but pets are usually verboten from those areas. We thought we’d ask readers to chime in and describe their experiences. What is your routine? Where do you take your dog to ensure that the day’s activities get done?

I’m the one who asked this question of the blog authors, hoping to get some feedback on if/where/when dog owners get together for quality dog time. I’m out on the mall every weekday (and most weekend) morning, but only see one or two other dogs at the most, and usually they’re jogging companions for their owners.
I’d also be interested in knowing what vets folks in this neighborhood use. We’ve just moved here from Kalorama/Adamns Morgan so looking to get into a similar routine to what I had up there.
Thanks
Tony
Given the number of dogs in my building, and the rarity of green space, I’m surprised this post hasn’t received more comments. I don’t own a dog, but my dog-owner visitors and family have frequented the mall and the scarce plots of grass along penn quarter streets — and yes they are forbidden in our courtyard. Would be interested in knowing where owners regularly walk or exercise their pets for future reference!
I live in Mt. Vernon Sq. so it may be a little bit of a walk for you. For my vet I go to City Paws on 14th St. (between S and T St. NW).
I don’t have an answer for green space. There just aren’t a lot of parks around. The schools in Shaw are hostile to dogs and the parks aren’t safe, especially when I get home after work. I just keep my dogs on their leashes and walk the neighborhood. Sometimes I walk down to the WH and back.
Saturday was so nice I took my dogs to Rock Creek Park. We got on the trails and they got to run around off their leashes. It was great!
FYI, it’s against the law not to leash your dog in federal parks (including Rock Creek Park). I doubt it’s enforced strictly–but you may want to avoid the mounted police who patrol the park and the other horse riders.
I take my pooch to the “park” created in the middle of the old convention center site. He runs in the empty lot and poops in the landscaped area.

Fido is walked at the “patch” across the street from Au Bon Pain on 5th Street. Solves all of Fido’s needs
