Bar José Coming To Penn Quarter (In An Undisclosed Location)
Matthew wrote in on the Andale closing story to let us know that José Andrés is expanding his Penn Quarter presence once again!
The WaPo article states that Rob Wilder and chef José Andrés’ new company THINKfoodGROUP:
- … is about to sign a lease for space in Penn Quarter where kitchen workers and others can conduct their research. The yet-to-be-publicized location will also house something for the general public: a small restaurant (the working title is Bar José) that will celebrate the cooking of Spain.
Is Penn Quarter becoming the culinary capital of DC?
Also noted: Metrocurean has some speculation as to who will be next to occupy the Andale location.

i’d like to plug a new Chinatown family restaurant, to placate those “appalled” at CM-gate.
Jackey’s Cafe has some great food in a clean, two-level restaurant. We’ve enjoyed, on separate occasions, the seafood congee, noodles, and a fantastic Dried Shrimp and Squid dish with chinese chives. The food is very clean and crisp, not overly oily/saucy/greasy.
Oh yeah, the Chinese Broccoli was nice too.
They must also use a different type of rice, I can’t quite put my finger on the difference. It’s good though.
Sure, the kitchen is a bit slow in its first week and they are still waiting on (dare i say) a liquor license, but the foundation is there for it to be a great neighborhood restaurant.
I will say that the entrees are generally $1 or so more than we’re used to in Chinatown. No biggie.
I’ll probably still frequent Big Wong for post-bar snacks, or Singapore for late night karaoke, but Jackey’s will work itself into the rotation.
Anyone know if Bar Jose or any of the other new restaurants will have tasting booths at the Arts On Foot event September 16? The web site (http:www.artsonfoot.org/) hasn’t posted the participating restaurants yet.
Sam, Jackey Cafe is at 611 H St.
my gf points out that one can actually tell the Szechuan and Hunan sauces apart there, whereas they can be indistinguishable at other Chinatown restaurants.
btw the noodles we had were the House Kan Shaw Yi Mein.
By the by, there has been recent movement at the old Ginger Cove space. In the past week, they’ve removed the exterior banners with the name of the restaurant, and it looks like some interior demo has started. Could this be the beginning of BarJose?
Transwestern’s web site has yet to mark the Ginger Cove property as “leased”. Note that the company is also leasing Mrs. Wong’s new Gallery Square complex, supposedly delivering in Fall 2007 (yeah right).
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
How exciting! Can’t wait to hear where they’re putting it. Maybe in the old Ginger Cove space at 8th & E? One of the new buildings on F? Jose Andres should get some sort of PQ citizen’s award for keeping our neighborhood’s dining scene so vibrant.
