CSI: Gallery Place *Updated*

Posted by gpliving
April 9, 2007

First off: Total credit for this post, pics, and title goes to Tra. Thanks again! (Update: Tra’s flickr set)

Update: We’ve received official word on what transpired, thanks to MPD District 1 Commander Groomes!

On Saturday at approximately 1438 hours – a citizen was boarding a metrobus when a male subject tried to grab their wallet out of their pocket as they boarded -MPD officers who were in the area on patrol observed this tussle and went to intervene and when they grabbed the suspect -a gun fell to the ground and both the suspect was apprehended without incident and gun recovered as well – male was arrested for Attempt Robbery and CPWL –

    there was NO shooting involved

===
Tra was walking on 7th street and stumbled across a crime scene in front of the 7th & H St NW metro stop.

We have an email in to the MPD to find out exactly what happened, but preliminary info leads us to believe that the gun was only dropped on the ground and no shots were fired. (We’ve learned from our February incident to not speculate on what transpired until we get official word from the MPD)

We had a gun dropped in our neighborhood today also. On the school grounds no less. Before it’s discovery, a clergyman was apparently held at gun point with it.

Did anyone else see on the morning news today that there was a stabbing on 8th and I Street? They mentioned a club that I didn’t even know existed. I didn’t get the details and never heard it reported again.

a gun was on the ground, is that a crime?

Comment by gpliving on April 7, 2007 @ 9:22 pm

rr 446: Hunh?? Whoever put that gun there committed a crime.

And now I’m trying to figure out why I just had to explain that.

Comment by rr 446 on April 7, 2007 @ 10:03 pm

what if it fell out of somebodys pocket, is THAT crime?

have another drink and maybe the logic will dawn on you.

Comment by CG on April 7, 2007 @ 10:20 pm

@ rr 446: It’s a crime to not be a police officer and to have a gun in the city. To connect the dots, whoever dropped the gun was probably not a police officer and so committed a crime by possessing the gun at all.

I was eating lunch @ Potbelly when the tape went up, and I certainly didn’t hear any shots fired.

It’s illegal to possess a gun in the District. So unless it fell out of a cop’s pocket (or a fed’s), then at the very least someone was in illegal possession of it.

Comment by rr 446 on April 7, 2007 @ 10:54 pm

thank you for the clarification on
when it is a crime.

It is legal to have a rifle or shotgun in your home for protection but illegal to posses a handgun.

Reposting my deleted 4/07/2007 09:24:00 PM comment:

I deleted it thinking that NBC4 had the scoop, but it looks like they’re totally wrong.. There is no club at 8th & I St!

Anon: A Fight broke out inside RFD located at 810 7th Street NW. Management got the private party out the rear of that location onto 8th Street NW. From there everything broke bad with three people getting stabbed at 8th and I Street NW.

Handgun posession is LEGAL in DC, provided that the handgun was registered prior to the date of the gun ban, and that it be kept in your residence, disassembled. Guns can also be transported through the District, but again, must be disassembled and not contain any ammunition.

Comment by Scott on April 9, 2007 @ 1:43 pm

Guns won’t be banned for long, if the D.C. Circuit court has the last word on it.

Comment by Anonymous on April 9, 2007 @ 2:05 pm

monkeyrotica, you’re right that there are loopholes in the DC gun law, but I’m guessing that loopholes don’t apply to most of the guns in DC right now. Particularly those guns in possession of pickpockets on 7th Street.

Thanks for the great pics, Tra and GPliving!
