The Kitchen Is Open
A touch of urban class came downtown with the opening of Zola Wine & Kitchen at 905 E Street, NW (northeast corner of 9th and E Streets). We mentioned the W (wine) portion of ZWK opening in our December 1 story but we didn’t touch on the K (Kitchen) portion. After all, it wasn’t really open yet and the details were not available at the time. With one month of classes under their belt, the Kitchen in ZWK is up and running.
The Kitchen faces E Street and features a full commercial kitchen mated with a bar, a tastefully spaced dining area and a restroom. The first month featured an Italian themed curriculum and going forward includes cooking classes, dessert classes and wine tasting classes. From personal experience, we can vouch for the friendly staff, classes that are part participation and part demonstration and a good chance that you’ll meet a downtown neighbor or two. Everybody gets to try their own culinary hand during a class but bring a pen and pay close attention to the chef as you’ll want to capture those seemingly small but important tips that allow you to prepare the recipe as taught. Absent an Internet presence when we ran the wine focused story, Zola Wine & Kitchen now has a website.
It’s Dostoyevsky Sunday
We’re a little embarrassed to admit we read The Brothers K before we read The Brothers Karamazov, but we did eventually catch up on our Russian literature. Even if you’ve never picked up any of Dostoyevsky’s work, you’ll no doubt enjoy the Washington premier of The Brothers Karamazov (Karamazovi) at the National Gallery of Art.
Directed by Petr Zelenka, Karamazovi is inspired by “the famously long-running stage adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s novel at Prague’s Dejvicke Theatre.” The movie, part of their New Masters in European Cinema series, starts at 4:30 pm today in the East building concourse auditorium; the director will be on hand for the screening.
Photo of the Week: Central Liquor

The Photo of the Week is of the neon sign of Central Liquor on F Street NW between 9th and 10th taken by Flickr user afagen who tagged it with pqliving. The bright red, yellow and orange hue combined with a partial window reflection caught our eye. Is this a landmark sign downtown?
Tag your Flickr photos with pqliving and we’ll check them out for posting as Photo of the Week.
The Bridge & Tunnel Crowd…In DC?

A subtle, invisible line winds its way down the banks of the Potomac. You first learn about it in high school. “We had to go all the way out to Tysons…I mean, why couldn’t we have just gone to Mazza on Wisconsin Ave.” After college it got reinforced. “I work in Rosslyn *but* it’s walking distance to Georgetown. Third Edition isn’t *that* far away for happy hour.” (Third Edition is now back, in fact. Time to resurrect Samantha’s and Rally in the Alley?) To oblige a late breaking Valentine’s Day party invite I realized I had not been to Virginia in months. Did I need my passport? Would Metro ask to see my visa? What would I discover on this expedition to Terra Virginia Firma?
