I think we can all agree that few things say “DC” more than Whoopi Goldberg. Why who could forget Whoopi hosting TNT‘s “A Very Special Christmas From Washington, DC” back in 1998?
So I guess it should come as no surprise that Madame Tussauds chooses to sit Whoopi outside their museum almost EVERY SINGLE DAY. I wonder though if they’d be better served by occasionally switching it up? I certainly understand not putting George Clooney out there as Mrs Columbo might wander off with him. But what about Honest Abe? Too macabre with the proximity to Ford’s Theatre? Maybe another former President instead, or is that a bad idea in an election year?
Who knows, maybe in London they stick Chris Tarrant outside instead of Ricky Gervais, or Winston Churchill?

Going on daylight savings means spring is coming soon so it’s time to plan that good weather bash for all your friends. To get your party going you need the right libations so we compiled a list of beer and wine stores downtown with a few notes about each. In many of these stores, liquor is also available. We’ve given our own Low (L), Medium (M) or High (H) brow rating for each shop to give you a feel for the quality of beverages available. These notes are subjective and purely based on shopping at each store while observing the selection, ambiance and customer service at each. Wagamama Noodle House Coming to Penn Quarter!
Thanks to Nicola, Cheryl, and DCDAVE for writing in to let us know (via WaBizJo) that Wagamama noodle house will be opening up on 7th Street in PQ later this year or early next year! If we had to guess what 7th St space the restaurant will occupy, we’d say the former Juan Valdez space at the corner of 7th & E St or the ground floor of the IBEW building (between I & Mass).
Penn Quarter is continuing the trend of attracting international restaurant chains looking to break into the US market. Nando’s from South Africa, Vapiano from Germany, La Tasca from the UK, and now we have Wagamama from the UK! Wagamama seems to have landed in Massachusetts last year with two store openings. Penn Quarter will be the location of their 3rd US-based restaurant.
For those who were curious, wagamama is a japanese name that means “willful, naughty child.”

Daily Candy: Asia 9 Opens Tomorrow
After much speculation, the Washington D.C. edition of the popular Daily Candy is reporting Penn Quarter’s Asia 9 will open tomorrow March 13, 2008. This is by no means confirmed, but perhaps one of our readers can shed some light on the subject. Below is Daily Candy’s description of the new hotspot.
The grandiose space, which opens tomorrow, houses a bright red sushi bar in front, a mauve and gold dining room, a granite-topped bar, and a posh VIP room with its own bar on the second floor. Oh, and don’t forget the eight-foot-tall figure “9.”
The menu nods to Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Thai cuisines. Sushi lovers will appreciate creative combos like the Red Stone Roll, which gets crunch from spicy tuna tempura. For the squeamish, there are curries, salads, and the soy-glazed Salmon en Papillote.
Throw in 40 sake varieties and seductive desserts, and one thing’s clear. It all adds up to something good.
