The discussion of a Penn Quarter grocery store waxes and wanes on this blog. Store or not, the reality is that everyone has to eat. Chipotle has some mean tacos and Ruth’s Chris serves up juicy steaks but seven days a week of eating out will either bust your budget, your gut or both. Your mileage may vary depending on you’re residence’s location so we’ve picked the intersection of 7th and H Streets, NW, as the starting point for figuring out the distance to the neighborhood’s closest big stores. Here’s the rundown:
Giant Food (1414 8th St, NW (8th and O St, NW))
Shaw – 0.68 miles away
Safeway (401 M St, SW (4th and M St, SW))
Waterfront – 2.55 miles away
Trader Joe’s (1101 25th St, NW (Penn Ave and 25th St, NW))
West End – 1.86 miles away
Whole Foods (1440 P St, NW (14th and P St, NW))
Logan Circle – 1.12 miles away

Update: We’ve received official word on what transpired, thanks to MPD District 1 Commander Groomes!
- On Saturday at approximately 1438 hours – a citizen was boarding a metrobus when a male subject tried to grab their wallet out of their pocket as they boarded -MPD officers who were in the area on patrol observed this tussle and went to intervene and when they grabbed the suspect -a gun fell to the ground and both the suspect was apprehended without incident and gun recovered as well – male was arrested for Attempt Robbery and CPWL –
there was NO shooting involved

Tra was walking on 7th street and stumbled across a crime scene in front of the 7th & H St NW metro stop.
We have an email in to the MPD to find out exactly what happened, but preliminary info leads us to believe that the gun was only dropped on the ground and no shots were fired. (We’ve learned from our February incident to not speculate on what transpired until we get official word from the MPD)
Old Rendering of the Reynolds Center Courtyard Roof
We recently came across an old rendering of the Reynolds Center Courtyard Roof. Obviously, this was not the final design, but it was interesting to see one of the old renderings. Reminds us of the Eiffel Tower in a way.

NBC4 Gets The News Wrong – Club At 8th & I St NW, What?
So, NBC4 has a headline today titled “Five Stabbed Outside D.C. Nightclub.” The only problem is that there is no nightclub at 8th & I St NW and definitely no nightclub named “Heart Of The City.”

- Five people were stabbed early Saturday after an argument at a Northwest Washington nightclub, police said.
Officers were called to the “Heart Of The City” club at Eighth at I streets about 3 a.m. for a report of a fight. They found five people suffering stab wounds outside the club, police said.
We subscribe to the MPD 1D listserv and we received the following info yesterday regarding the incident:
- From a citizen: A Fight broke out inside RFD located at 810 7th Street NW. Management got the private party out the rear of that location onto 8th Street NW. From there everything broke bad with three people getting stabbed at 8th and I Street NW.
From the Commander: There was a triple stabbing in am hours in front of rhb [sic, RFD bar] club and one victim struck in head. No arrests made and info going to abra
Our question is, where did NBC4 dream up a “Heart of the City” nightclub on 8th & I? There isn’t even a liquor license for any establishment in the area, except PS7’s – which is an upscale restaurant.
