Two bits of news from the Historic Preservation Review Board’s meeting from July 27.
- 600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (and 609-631 I Street NW), HPA #06-289, concept/demolition, alteration, new Construction.
Concept approved with design refinements requested. Staff report approved. Vote 10-0.
- 1000 F Street, NW, HPA #06-339, concept/demolition, alteration, addition.
Concept plan approved. Applicant will submit for preliminary approval prior to submission of final plans.
Preliminary plans should also include developed plans for the restoration of the historic façade and salvage of significant features of the old Waffle Shop. Vote 11-0.

Penn Quarter Tunnels Get Scrubbed
According to the Washington Examiner, DC Transportation officials will be closing certain lanes of the 3rd, 9th, and 12th street tunnels between 7pm and 5am. Cleaning crews will be scrubbing those tiles that line the tunnels, but don’t expect a drastic change in color – underneath all of that dirt and grime are shiny yellow colored tiles.
Apparently, the tunnels are cleaned and inspected every month. But, for some reason, the cleaning is getting a lot of publicity this week. The work will last from August 15 to August 25.

Chains Vs. Local Retail In DC
Jason sends us a link to a WaPo article talking about the debate of chains vs. local retail stores.
It’s a nice read about retail events happening in Dupont Circle, our neighbor to the northwest.
Gallery Place does have its fair share of retail chains, but the greater Penn Quarter area also has a nice representation from local retailers (mostly in the form of restaurants).
