Still A Chance For A PQ Apple Store
The Examiner has an opinion piece that summarizes the latest news of Apple trying to open a store in downtown DC. For those who haven’t been keeping track of things, Apple has been trying to get plans approved to build a store on Wisconsin Ave in Georgetown (they would raze the existing building). This past week, the Old Georgetown Board rejected the 4th revision of these plans mostly because the plans don’t fit in with the architecture of the other buildings on the street. The WaPo has more details on the four plans.
One does have to wonder how much more time Apple will spend trying to open a store in Georgetown. They purchased the space for the store two years ago and still haven’t even begun construction. So, on one hand, they already own some land and that would seem to indicate a level of dedication to utilizing that space. On the other hand, the land is not useful if they can’t build a store on it that meets company design requirements.

That article is a fabrication. Georgetown is still mobbed on weekends. It is still the place to shop in DC. Granted there may be lots of tourists but I go there and my friends go there to shop and we all live here.
I would think Apple would fit in downtown much better than G-town. Most Apple stores in other cities are located downtown especially in SF and NYC. G-town for shopping…yawn! If you’re the Range Rover type and shop at Saks perhaps, but it’s not reflective of the rest of DC. PQ is now the epicenter of activity.
F Street b/t 7th and 10th seems like a natural fit. But I imagine they will try hardest to make the Georgetown site work.
What seems like a fit to us has nothing to do with Apple’s viewpoint. They want Georgetown for a reason. They know about all of the other areas in D.C. Their market research lead them to Georgetown, not here, not Tenleytown, not Logan, not Dupont. Georgetown. Apple is not coming to the Penn Quarter.
How presumptuous of some people to say that Georgetown is not reflective of the rest of DC. I live in DC, and I still do most of my fashion apparel shopping in Georgetown. And, I’m not the Range Rover type. Penn Quarter is a nice entertainment and restaurant district, but it does not have the critical mass of fashion apparel retail that Georgetown does. And, it may someday.
As for Apple, I would prefer if the store could be located in a more central area of DC (like Penn Quarter). But, that’s not to say that a Georgetown won’t be successful.
Why do tourists like Georgetown? Because it is nice for shopping, among other reasons. I know because I’ve asked them. Does their opinion matter? Yes. Some people may not know that Georgetown has a lot of stores that are found nowhere else in DC or the DC region. If you don’t know some of those stores, then you may not know the full story on Georgetown.
They’ll stay with Georgetown…but if they came to PQ would be nice if they took the 5th column building on F ST to ensure no nightclub opens up there…….
In the WSJ this morning, Microsoft announced they will open stores to rival Apple. Perhaps, they can put one downtown. Apple has a great product currently, but I believe their products are reaching maturity. Look for Microsoft to lead a comeback in the next decade!
